Call of duty And Radeon 9600XT 128 mb

I'm having a problem with Call of Duty (first one) and my video card. I get a message saying the VPU is resetting the video card and then the game stops responding. I have to shut it down with control ,alt, delete. I thought I would check for driver updates but the ATI website is over my head. The game plays fine on my son's computer. He has 512 mb ram, Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 and P4 2.6 ghz HT. I thought the 9600xt was a better card so I bought it for my first build. I hope some of you hard core gamers can help me out. My driver version is 6.14.636 the date is 10-28-2003. If there is a later driver can I download it from another source other than ATI?

Thanks in Advance,

P.S. the 9600xt is made by Gigabyte

What do you mean the ATI website is over your head? Go to the ATI website. Select "downloads" from the top menu bar. Select your product and your OS, you will be taken to where you can select several products. At the top of the list will be Radeon. Click on it and it will take you to the latest driver version (Catalyst 5.12). Select the CCC download (around 30 megs) and click on "run". It will install the driver and control center for you. I would suggest removing your old ATI driver and reboot before you install the new driver. When your PC reboots, it will ask if you want to install a driver, just click cancel, then go to ATI site and get the new one. You can do this, it's even easier than I described. The website is pretty intuitive so it simplifies things.

hmmm....makes you think. guess since the game "supports" Nvidia, it might run more stable on it?

I had the exact same problem. It will be cleared up by removing your existing drivers and installing the new catalyst 5.12 drivers like stated previously.

Hmmm, that doesn't make me think anything. The NVIDIA support from the game has nothing to do with his issue. I assure you that the ATI card I run in my sig rig runs the game QUITE nicely.

I just wasn't sure what the site meant by catalyst and if it was the same thing as a driver. I installed the 5.12 and the game plays fine now. Thanks for the info. Do you think I should go ahead and upgrade my RAM to 512mb to help the game run more smoothly?

Yes.
Fortunately ram is cheap now, you don't have to go crazy, but at least 512mb or more depending on your games.
I have a gig of ram now and I expect my next pc to have 2 gigs.

I would definately upgrade to 512. If you can financially handle it up to a gig of ram. Run two 512mb sticks in dual channel. You will notice a big difference in how COD2 runs. Its a resource hog and gig will allow you more room to run smoothly without hicups.
