Angry Fire Photoshop 5,6 3dstudio Max 3 don't run ...PS 3, Bryce 4, and Flash 5 all do....why ??

I just got a new pc from Gateway (1400MHz Athlon system with 256PC133SDRAM and 64MB Nvidia and I'm running Win Me).

But for some reason my graphics programs will not work properly :P

PS 5 gives me a CoolType.DLL error and closes
PS 6 gives me a fatal exception something and closes

3ds max won't run.

Flash runs but gives me problems like the inability to use the help section or use the Publish settings, Publish, or Publish preview boxes.

Photoshop 3.0 runs fine. (I got out the old dusty box and installed 8 dusty 3.5"'s for this proggie).

Please please help. The Gateway tech guys don't know what's going on. Macromedia doesn't know what's going on. I don't know what's going on.

I spent an hour with the Gateway guy doing the copilot thing and he played with stuff checked out settings and decided that it wasn't my pc that was the problem. Well if it's the programs how come everyone over at Were-Here.com can run the software on Win Me (thought most use 200oPro) ??

Kenn Orr just sent me over here. I hope someone can help.

Thanks for any and all advice/info.

frustrated,
-Dave

Update ::

Flash works correctly! But only if I launch it from the start menu (not the desktop). Tech guy said he's seen this with pirated software (but unless Macromedia's sending me pirated software...) so that's not the problem. Anyhow it works.

3ds Max works now. Dunno why. I reinstalled it now it works.

Photoshop 5 is the only thing not working for me :P poop.
But my old dusty (really dusty) version 3 does work.

PS 5.0 closes everytime it tries to initialize it's COOLTYPE.DLL so I'm thinking maybe Win Me handles fonts differently than Win9x OR the CoolType.DLL file is corrupted (but it worked on my old machine perfectly).

any thoughts ?

I went looking for tech notes and readme's on their site but all I found was that "if you have a many fonts Photoshop may take a long time to pen bc PS must initialize all of the fonts." Well I have just the default fonts (which is alot but....)

Perhaps Microsoft's site would be helpful. I think I'll go dig around for any notes on fonts...

Sounds like tech guy doesn't wanna sound stupid. I would love to have him explain how the software knows it's pirated so decides to create a non-functional desktop shortcut.

Try restoring that DLL, maybe it is corrupt.

It almost sounds like there is a software compatability issue somewhere. The fact that one program didn't work when everything was installed, then you re-install the program and it works suggests that something is copying an incompatable file version somewhere. The real trick is if this is so, where

how might I restore the .DLL ?? I went rooting around for stuff in Microsoft's site but couldn't find anything useful.

Adobe reccommends using only Intel based systems (oops.) But why then would version 3.0 work? If it was a corrupt Adobe file why would it have worked on my old pc ?? I ran PS 5 on Win 95 and later on 98 both without a problem. now I move it to this pc and wham!

yeah. where. :P

I'm going to go DL Adobe's PDF reader it has a COOLTYPE.DLL that might be the same one ? ... I dunno.

You will have to find it from one of your programs and copy it from the install disk to the hard drive (it may have to be expanded as well).

Update: All Adobe software fails on my system

Everything works fine exept Adobe software.

I just DL'ed Adobe After Effects and Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe.com installed and the BOTH gave me the Cooltype.DLL error. A friend referenced an Adobe tech note about CMAPs for PS 6.0 and I did what it said to do (delete selected CMAPS or install the 6.01 update) and nothing worked.

There must be a setting somewhere in my system that is messing wit the Adobe stuff. It's not reading my fonts correctly or...I dunoo but all my other software works fine. Photoshop 3.0 is the only piece of Adobe sofware that works.

thanks for all of your time,
Dave
