Which operating system do you think is best for a mainly gaming environment?

Windows 98 / 98SE / ME + DirectX 7 or 8

Those OS are very very similar and combined with a new DirectX and new graphics drivers would give you maximum performance.

Also very good is Win2K. Although not as fast as Win98/ME it is - at least in my opinion - fast enough to play games. You may lose 20fps or so, but still get 50 to 70 (depends on the game and the graphics card [I have PIII 800 and GeForce 2 GTS, so it should be even more on your PC]) at 1024x768 in good quality.

But if you want to play as fast as possible, go with Win98 (FE or SE) or WinME.

Some games are actually better in Win2k. Unreal engine games come to mind (Unreal, UT, Rune, Deus Ex, etc). You get less frames per second by about 10, but none dropped, which makes for much smoother overall play.

Question what do you think?

I have a 3D prophet II mx on a Hp 7850 pavilion wtih a 933mhz PIII, 256 ram. On unreal, I normally play with about 60fps, but on some boards I have gotten super smooth with 90fps. Still, on the larger boards, I sometimes get jerky movement, especially the ctf boards.

I have a question: which is the best overall game on the market? Quake, Unreal Tournament or any other suggestions?

The choppiness on large open maps is a demonstration of the small amount and slower clock speed on the RAM with the Geforce II MX. It can't move that many textures in and out of memory quick enough to keep up with a large map .

The moves in Unreal make it a great game. Quake and Half-Life are still a bit primitive there in my opinion when compared to UT. With a bit of practice you can literally pull off Matrix-like moves in Unreal Tournament, which opens up all sorts of new strategies for the game itself.

Thanks for the info on the MX II. I agree about UT being the better game. BTW, I have Matrix mods and Lazy matrix, and I love them. I never play by myself with out them. I just wish there were more people online that played them through UT servers.

UT's been going strong for two or three years, but you wouldn't believe how many servers out there are, shall we say, 'promiscuously' hosted on university hardware by students .

That said, it's always a bit dead during the summer. Wait until September, then UT servers should come back again with a lot of new offerings in public games.

Glad to hear it. I am still rather new to Unreal Tournament, but I'm starting to get some skills. I used to play games mostly like resident evil or Madden, but I love Unreal and Rogue Spear. However, I can remember playing Bard's Tale on a friends apple computer back in the day. That game was the bomb at the time. We were learning to program in basic--makes me smile, thinking about it now. Football and girls distracted me away from my love of computers, though. I am only recently finding my way again: much to the chagrin of my girlfriend.
Unfortunately, I have a 56k connection here in Knoxville--learned to stay off of the busier servers. It's only courteous. I live on a major highway too. Makes me sick to think of all the money I pay for obselesence. BTW, I attend the University of Tennessee, UT. That would make me a UT student. Yeah, that's a cheesy Unreal Tournament reference, but I had to throw it in there. Go Vols!

You should stop by the public(s) I play on sometime. There's not alot of clan league activity during the summer, but there's still quite a few good publics out there to mess around on.

Try this one out...

unreal://216.151.124.201:7777

It's ISP co-located on the east coast, in Pittsburgh, so considering geographics it might be playable for ya ping-wise. Me and a few clan-mates play there often, as do some friends of ours from five or six other clans. Usually always someone around there.

Be happy to give ya some 'pointers' .

Any and all advice you have on unreal or computers in general, I will gladly accept with no shame.

Counter-strike! It blows the pants of unreal! Unreal is a pretty good game but when you get sick of shooting people with plasma (whatever that is) or shooting someone with a rocket and they get a bit of hang-time but don't die, play something a bit more realistic! Like CS! I know that sometimes you take a shot in the head and it doesn't kill you in cS, but at least the guns aren't invented and you can't go kamakaze. I'm a bit of a CS psycho so I'm all about it. I guess I'm biased as all hell.
Half-life has been holding down a solid gaming community for 3 years now. They're still putting out patches for it so someone must be playing it! (CS is the most played FPS... and its a mod!)

Unreal tournament is the bomb. I recently added another 128mb to my system and it opened up a whole other world for me. Let me tell you, unreal is a fully interactive 3d environment full of uppity mothas waiting to be fragged. Other games just don't come close to that. Yeah, I like games like rogue spear and vampire, and starcraft, but when I am in the mood to let off some steam and watch someone blow up into thousands of little giblets, unreal is my game.

bye the way xayd, look for me in the next few days. I am going to try to get on as much as possible.
