Benchmark numbers are purely for bragging rights... It's kind of a combination for me, I would run benchmarks on a new computer to make sure it's running as it should be. You could compare your numbers to people with similar rigs to see how you stack up. But mainly, they are for bragging rights... "Hey, I got 5000 in 3dmark05! - Well, I got 6000 with mine! "

The most common benchmarks are:

3dmark06
3dmark05
3dmark03
PCMark05
PCMark04
(www.futuremark.com)

SuperPi
Aquamark

Those are the main synthetic ones used, you could also run timedemos for games that you have, but it's not really necessary once you've run some of the above ones.

Just go to the website blue shows above and download them. They are for bragging rights, to a point, but they ARE good tools. I use them as comparative measurements to find out if the latest video drivers are better/worse than the last version, the effects of overclocking a particular component, etc. Used in that fashion, they can give you a good idea of the effects of changes on YOUR system. They are tools, not the be all, end all of PC's. Use them as such. And remember, 500 more points in 3DMark05 generally doesn't mean squat in an actual game.........
