Runescape Crashes FireFox / IE (Really Random)

Hello all,

I have recently been playing RuneScape to help pass the summer vacation until school starts back again (Tomorrow ). It seems that I have a very random problem, which none of my other friends who play experience. When ever I load the game from a FireFox browser, I can usually expect to get in about 5 minutes game play, then the entire browser crashes and automatically closes (but leaves firefox.exe running). The same things happens in Internet Explorer. Randomly, I can play for hours sometimes without any issues.

A few times I have noticed it crashes the same time I recieve an instant message (Trillian Basic) - but other times I can be chatting and playing at the same time.

Other times, it will happen when I refresh a different tab (such as PCM forums).

And lastly, some times it wont even log in (fully). I will enter my name (Zengath), and my password, and then it will log in but just hang there saying "Loading Please wait" where I can wait for 20 minutes without progress. This doesn't happen on any other PC which I play on, only mine (in sig). Other times it will just open as a plain white rectangle after logging me in.

Now, I have heard there are some issues with Java (latest version). Do you think I should try to roll back to an early version and try? I also heard (on RS) that Java doesn't work properly with more than 2GB of RAM - well I only have 2GB, so I don't think that is a problem.

Could I be missing something on my computer?

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
I don't play Runescape so I can't help with that but, if I remember, you've been having Firefox problems all along?
I'm going to put my reply in your post in General Software.

Yes Pam, I have always been having FF issues. But, like I mentioned, it does the exact same thing in Internet Explorer. Later I will be opening up my Smoothwall box to clean it out, so I will try a direct internet connection to the modem and see if that changes anything.

It is completely random - played all saturday non-stop w/o issues, and now it wont even fully load and crashes both FireFox and IE. And I have done all necesary antispyware and virus scans thinking I might have a tricky little sliver of malware, but my system is clean.

That is realllly odd. I play rs too. But it always crashes in firefox soo i play it in IE no prob. You sure u didnt try other java thingys? You know when u load and select high or low detail theres a place at the bottom where you can select your type of java...or something its been a while since ive touched it. Perhaps reinstalling java?

Ah, I see what you mean, I am trying to cut back on my RS addiction, so I will try out those different Java options tomorrow. At least I know I am not the only one who experiences RS crashing in FF - Maybe I should report the bug.

Which version of FireFox are you using?

Pam, I have to head to school, but when I get back I will toy around with the suggestions on the webpage you linked me to - thanks.

Alright, I have seemed to get it working just fine with IE. Still, no luck with Firefox, where now I can log in but the window closes entire moments later. The Java Applet which RuneScape uses seems to interfere with F@H, and freezes my computer. This isn't an issue as long as I close F@H until I have finished playing. Note, this probably wouldn't happen if I used the non-graphical F@H client (which I will switch to eventually).
