Occasionally, after loading BF2 and getting onto a server, the game will crash and bring me back to my desktop. If i try again, it will do the same. The problem is only solved when i restart my computer. this is extremely annoying, especially because it take so long to load a map... I'm running the game mostly on high, some medium, with 2x AA. I was thinking it was crashing because of too much processing maybe? Might putting down some settings help? It also sometimes happens with HL2 and CS:S, but i rarelly play those anymore. Is it the games problem or mine? What can help?

Does it ever allow you to join a server online? Also, can you play single player at all? If it's not letting you connect then you could be lacking the most recent patch. I'm not sure if that would make you crash or not, but it is possible. If that were the case then you should be able to play single player.
Your thread title says "games" - are you having this problem with anything else?

I have had this same thing happen in Half Life 2. Sometimes if i got into a new area, it will say loading and never stop. And the sounds will studder. It happens in CS:S sometimes, randomly though, not when something i loading. I have the latest patch for BF2, and I play is all the time, but sometimes, like at the beginning of a gaming session, it will crash right after the game loads; right after the boring 4 min wait. If it tried to run BF2 again and join a server, the same thing will happen, so i have to restart my comp and than it works fine. Could it be a memory leak or something? Maybe my video card is over heating?

It seems to be happening when the system is chugging through alot of memory swapping and hardrive access. For example, when I load a map in BF2, for the first minute it is very slow and i see the harddrive light on constantly. Could my system just be giving up? When everything loads, the games play fine. I get about 60 FPS consistantly in BF2

Two Bit, check your swap file useage. The symptoms you are describing are similar to the times when the game (ESPECIALLY BF2) runs out of memory and goes to the swap file. Check your page file usage to see if it being used a lot. I believe you can run a history profile to take a look over a period of time. A great deal of swap file useage would indicate a need for more ram. I know I saw a HUGE improvement on my system when I went from 1 to 2 gigs of ram. Loading times, lag, and crashes all disappeared or became almost non existent. That particular game is a horrible memory hog.

How would I check my swap file usage... would making the virtual memory bigger help? How can I keep a record of my swap file usage?

I don't know how to keep a record of it, nor of how to check it, but I do know how to change it.
Go to control panel, system, advanced, performance, virtual memory, and change it to double the amount of your physical ram (2048 mb). That might help your games - I have mine set to that. |

OK i did that. I set the initial size to double my ram, the size you recommended and the max size to 4 times, 4Gb. Hopefully that will help out. Also, I noticed a big difference when i switched "textures" from high to medium. Could barely see a difference graphically, but made loads alot faster.

Sorry Two Bit, I just revisited this thread. I think you have it figured out. Your vid card will probably respond a lot better with the settings turned down a bit. BF2 is a very demanding game on the system. Let us know how it goes. Another good thing would be to add another gig of ram if you can afford it. BF2 is a memory hog, and when I played the game, I saw my load times go down significantly and overall improved performance when I went from 1 gig to 2 gigs with my sig rig. FWIW.

Yeah adding another gig would be beneficial, but i would rather put that money toward a new vid card, and 2 gigs a still ALOT right now, maybe when Vista comes out ill consider it. thanks

Take a look at this article that THG did concerning ram:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/...u_really_need/ Especially look at this page for info about BF2 and the benefits of 2 gigs compared to 1 gig and 512 mb. http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/...eed/page6.html Also check out the next page after that one (finishes up the BF2 section). |

The article there is mostly talking about FPS and the differences between 1gb and 2 gb with that aspect, but that doesn't take into account loading speeds and the lag at the beginning of maps... although it is a good read. I really don't think the extra 100 is worth that bit of performance now though
