Empire at War is out

Did anyone buy it? I'd rather have some of your reviews before I buy this one.

Haven't bought it yet. I was thinking of preordering it, but after playing the demo, I realized there was no need - this game ain't flyin off the shelf anytime soon.

Gamespot gave it an 8.7 out of 10:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/...ml?sid=6144457

I'm waiting for this one:

Gamespot usually never gives a higher score than IGN. I'm shocked.

I've been waiting for this game to come out for a long time - please don't tell me it's bad. Their last attempt at a strategy game was pretty awful (Force Commander) but this was supposed to be so much better. Force Commander shouldn't have been released to be honest.

The demo was kind of fun but when is an 8.7 bad?

It's not, but relativley speaking - it is when comparing it to other anticipated RTS games that gamespot reviews.

Trust me, if anybody was hopeing for a high score, it was me - I've been waiting for this game for over 6 months.

Anyways, I just picked up the game and its installing right now, I'll post back and tell you what I think.

The demo was kind of hard for the land part I thought. But the space battles were really fun. The graphics were kind of lagging too. Post back MakeYourslf.

I got the game on a special order already, because I was really excited about it. It'd different than a regular RTS, but all in intriguing ways. I'd say get it if you're even just thinking about it, no question. A sweet game, haven't finished yet.

The graphics are great for how big this game is. Remember Battlefront?

Alright guys, I've been playing the game for 3 and half hours straight and I have to say that I highly recommend it. 9.5 out of 10 for me.

You can recant my statement earlier in this thread, this game blew me away. The graphics are pretty good, but the strong point in the game is gameplay during skirmishes - You have the option of starting out with a pre-consrtucted base or building it yourself. From there, you build an army and assult your opponent - like a normal RTS. However, the diversity of camera angles makes this game so special - you can view the screen from almost any angle you want - it rotates on the X, Y, and Z axis.

The space battles in SW: EAW are not like anything I've ever seen; they are phenomenal. Almost every ship and cruiser you can think of in Episodes IV, V, and, VI are available to build. On top of the "cinematic camera view", the intricate detail of the nebulas and asteroids add to the realism of the gameplay - giving you the feeling of being submerged in the movie.

In addition of the skirmish games, there is a campaign mode and galactic conquest mode, which I havent ventured to yet. I've been way to entertained by the land and space skirmish battles.

As soon as I finished my first skirmish (playing as the Imperials on Alderan), I knew that this has been the best $50 that I've spent on a game in a long time.

tomster and flawedreality: I recommend that you do not form your opinion on the demo's tutorial and one sinlge player level alone, I can guarantee that when you are introduced to the actual gameplay that you will be sold on this game like I was.

Glad to hear the actual game is pretty good. I've been feeling pretty let down with this demo so far. It's a VERY short version of the galactic campaign that lets you go through one space battle (an asteroid field) and one land battle (destroy a shielded base), plus a simplified tutorial. I've spent an hour throwing troops at one shield generator trying to destroy it. I'll have a massive army of troops wreaking havoc until one little imperial speeder bike will swoop in and lay a stupid mine (right before he dies) that kills 1/4 of my army. It's very frustrating. If I have to do it many more times I'm going to throw something at the monitor.

I've was trying to rotate the camera during combat, but all I can do is make it scroll left, right, forwards, and backwards, then zoom in and out. How do you rotate it? I looked in the options menu but didn't see anything for it.

It may not be available in the demo, but under advanced game options, you can check the box labeled "Right and Left mouse button rotation". With it enabled, you click both mouse buttons and move the mouse in the direction you want to rotate.

Yeah, that level in the demo was very frustrating, but galdly, its nothing liek that in the actual game.

hahahahha man ive been waiting for this game since it was first put up on their site... like a year and a half... i was sooo hooked. like galatic battleground (if anyone remembers that) was reallly fun, an AOE wit star wars skins....

anyhow I GOT THE GAME!!!!! w00000000T

and i love it, graphic wise my comp isnt good so not bad for a FX5200 cant wait till i upgrade tho. the land battles are so so but the space battles makes it awesome. try the skirmish... its really an interesting wayy of combat. what it is basicly u have a space station and you get credits over time and u can upgrade ur space station to create better bigger stuff.

and modding isnt that hard once u have the basic tools.

i love this game, cant wait till the kotor mod comes out for it, republic vs sith or mandorlians.

all in alll 9/10 some of the ai is kinda dumb even on hard but thats land. the real treasure is on space battles...

Well off to play more! im not gonna take screenies cuz my comp is bad lmao

peace!

All that AND a cinematic camera option? I think I'll pick it up tonite.
If you could jump into the cockpit of one of those X-wings and take control, I'ld leave work now and go buy it.

Thats what the Battlefront series is. This game is basically the RTS version of it.

I know, I know... I just think a RTS where you had the option to control indiv. units as if it were a FPS or a sim would be way cool. Some day... *gazes out the window longingly and begins to sing a little song*

I'm still waiting for XWing Alliance 2. Bust out the dusty joystick that I haven't used since 1999.

Oh yeah! Now you're talking! LucasArts, please! I will give you my money. They made like 10 X-wing games. What's one more?

Just started playing last night. I can see elements of the old Star Wars Rebellion strategy game in the mix. Good depth - I look forward to ruling the galaxy!

i find the land battles to be quite difficult if playing the rebels, but the space battles are some what "easy" if you just make a large number of y and x-wings with a couple of corvettes and frigates.

There was a game called "Machines" by MS (this was QUITE a few years ago) which had this feature. I played the demo a decent amount. Build up spider-like robots, give em dual plasma cannons, designate a target area, hop in and play FPS style until I got killed. Then, picked another and did the same. I'm disappointed at not seeing any other games with this feature.

BF2 *could* simulate this effect IF everyone actually listened to orders.

After playing through both campaigns, I feel somewhat disappointed. The galactic conquest is ok but somewhat frustrating as the attacks are unrelentless. I find the in-battle unit caps to VERY restrictive. If the cap was a bit larger (double) then the battles would be much more satisfying.

well neat thing is how easy it is to mod the stuff using the XML files. i set like all my cap ships to like either 1 or 2 pop and set the star fighters to zero and other ships to 1.. i usually set the capital to 2... and maybe drpo the price a tad and make build time faster (for both so its a lil fair)

XML files, cant wait for the mod level and like models and stuff

sith wars based off knights of the old republic... gonna be awesome!

Haven't heard of that yet. Sounds good though. Glad to see they're gonna make games in that universe rather than the one of the prequel films. I finally got into kotor, and am very impressed. It doesn't say much for the latest starwars films when they are outshone by a lowly PC game.

They're probably waiting for the sales figures to roll in. For their future, I see expansions, expansions, and expansions. I like the fact that certain technology has to be stolen early on for the rebels. I think the campaign needed more work/better plot; it seems to be a drawn out galactic conquest tutorial rather than a single player experience. But I imagine that this game will see a very large multiplayer following. Still... although I relish the RTS single player experience, that's not how a game's going to draw loyal followers.

When you say new time setting, do you mean the time period that Episodes I-III are set in? I'd personally prefer the old (original) time period myself, it makes it seem more authentic. I'm glad they created the game itself in this time so the expansions could continue the story into the future and into the past (Episodes I-III and beyond ~ KOTOR).

You guys were saying certain limits on ship production took away from the overall majesty of the space combat? Does the altering of the XML files fix this and allow you more leeway in your construction?

I'm waiting for Spring Break to get here before I go out and buy it (end of next week) - if I were to get it now I wouldn't get any school work done (I wouldn't have gotten that 100 on my Math 1101 test ).
