For the past several months, my computer has been experiencing random lockups when playing 3-d games. I have yet to experience a lockup during multiplayer, just in single player and campaign modes. I belive I have narrowed it down to being a problem with dirextx. The reasons that I assume that it is DX is that DX is the only constant between the various games (eg. some use D3D, others use OpenGL). In addition, when running the samples and sample code provided with the DX8a SDK, I receive the lockups. The lockups are an instantaious dead stop in which I cannot even move the mouse and the last second of audio is played over and over. I did not start experiencing this problem until I set up RAID 0 on this computer. I have the lastest drivers for audio, video,RAID,nic, mainly the latest drivers for each of my devices.
My setup is an AMD T-bird 1GHz, ABIT KT7-RAID, Voodoo3 2000, SB PCI128, (on board High-point RAID controller) 256MB PC133. The games that I have been playing are Unreal Tournament (436 patch) Halflife (includes opposing force), Quake 3, and Red Alert2 among others. In addition, my CPU idles around 90-100 deg F and hops up to around 120-125 under load. I have a GlobalWin FOP32 heatsink and 2 case fans. This has me extremely frustrated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Last edited by kcbhiw; 07-17-2001 at 04:28 PM. |

This sure sounds like a hot video card to me. You got a cooling fan on that V3? Try playing games with the cover off of the case. Play a game and if you get a lockup, immediately unplug everything, pull the video card and feel the chips on it. If any or all of them are almost too hot to touch the odds are very good that this is your problem.

another thing is loose cables and such have a tendencie of finding there way into the cooling fan so you might want to check for that i speak from experience lol that could be a posibility.
