While playing HL2, this happened...?

Yesterday I played and twice the game stopped, closed out completely, and went to desktop. Today I pause for a second to step away, I come back and this is on the screen. I'm guessing my video card/computer can't handle the game too well.

If you were playing on the system which is in your sig, then the card should handle the game. The error prompt means that your cooling is insufficient, probably due to dell trying to make their systems as quiet and fanless as possible.

Perhaps the cooling on your video card is not functioning so well. Have you dusted/cleaned out the innards of your computer lately? Dust accumulation can affect how well the fans/heatsinks cool your CPU, GPU, etc. Also check to make sure your video cards heatsink and fan are properly mounted on the board, and are not falling loose.

Parker, I edited your image into a link to keep the boards dial-up friendly.

I used compressed air on the whole innards about 1-2 months ago so that should be fine. Everything on the card seems sturdy.

That the rig in your sig? No wonder - Dell cases aren't meant for hot components. You might try running it with the side panel off and a small floor fan blowing into the case and see if it goes away. If it does you might want to install a slot cooler to remove the heat... If you can get temperature readings you might try to run a program such as ATiTool and see if you can get what temperature it is running at...

Have you checked to make sure the video card fan is spinning?

I had a 9600xt in a Dell case for a couple years with no problems. Is the case getting enough ventilation though? Do you have it enclosed tightly in a desk?

I agree with everyone else about the video card not getting enough air, but mainly just wanted to let you know your system should be able to handle HL2 fine. I'm running HL2 on an AMD 1600+ (1.4 GHz internal), 512M ram, and a Radeon 7000 video card. If this thing can handle it, I know that 9600XT will do it. I'd check the fan on the video card, as mentioned, and see if it's for sure spinning all the time. You don't by chance have it overclocked, do you?

Thanx for all the advice. First off, I've had this computer for a while so I'll be upgrading within a year or so hopefully. From now on, I'll build my own. Right now the computer is in my computer desk. One of those wooden desks that has a space in the lower left specifically for a computer. And the computer desk is about 6 inches from the wall. So it's possible the ventilation is a problem. Also, I'd posted a while back about the video card fan making a buzzing noise. I haven't heard it do that in a while though.

Better pop it open and make sure it's still running. Check for dust build up while you are in there...
