question about fps
Howdy.
Well i love playing counter strike. Before i reformatted my comp and updated OS to 2000 pro server... i had win 98. I got 85 fps by setting the fps limit to max in the game console. However, after the reformatting i expected to attain 85 fps once again. I was dissapointed to see i could only get 60 fps. I use Open GL. Hrm, any ideas? I still get under 50 ping though, which i'm very happy about still.

Is your monitor setup correctly. A low refresh rate can limit your frames per second.

Ok, just to be sure:
1. You had Win98, and you got 85 fps in CS 2. You reformatted the hard drive 3. You installed Win2K 4. Now you're getting 60 fps Well, as already said, Win2K is good for games, although not as fast as Win98. So you can't get the 85 fps. Anyway, anything above 30fps is smooth, so don't worry about it. Do you have the most current version of directX? That might help you get a few of those FPSs back.

Yeah, it might. DX 8.0a generally gives you about 10 frames per second more across the board than you'd get with DX 7.
There are also issues with certain vid cards, of course. My Voodoo5 is virtually the same in 9x/ME and 2000, I can't see a noticable difference. On the other hand my brother's ATI Radeon is noticably faster in 98 than in 2000. It's gonna depend on the drivers more than anything. 3dfx's drivers have been traditionally compatible with everything, with very few issues in any particular OS since the Voodoo3 line. ATI has been notoriously lazy with driver releases, and they 'do' have un-addressed issues in some operating systems with some cards. Xayd |
