Nvidia Officially Unveils GeForce 7900 Go Graphics Chips

Nvidia Corp. on Tuesday formally announced its new series of mobile graphics processors that promises to enable extreme high definition (XHD) gaming on portable personal computers. The new GeForce Go 7900 chips have already been adopted by leading notebook makers Dell and Toshiba and several other high-performance system makers are expected to adopt the new GeForce Go 7900 shortly.

The new GeForce Go 7900-series increase performance bar for graphics processing units (GPUs) designed for notebooks and Nvidia believes that it is time to promote wide-screens for laptops to utilize the power the new GPUs have.

“At XHD screen resolutions of 1680x1050 and 1920x1200, games have up to 65% more image detail than games viewed on common 1024x768 notebook screens. These powerful GPUs are designed to blaze through games at extreme HD resolutions with state-of-the-art 3D graphics effects. The result is a greatly enhanced level of realism and immersion for gamers on the go,” said Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of the GPU business at Nvidia.

The new GeForce Go 7900-series GPUs for desktop replacement laptops consists of two chips: the model Go 7900 GS and the model Go 7900 GTX, the former can boast with relatively low power consumption, whereas the latter delivers world’s highest performance among the mobile GPUs released to date. Both new chips are produced on the 90nm process technology and are based on the GeForce 7900 micro-architecture with some additional power-saving capabilities.

The GeForce 7900 GTX has 24 pixel processors, 8 vertex processors and is clocked at 500MHz, a pretty high speed for mobile chip. Nvidia recommends to use 512MB of 1200MHz GDDR3 memory with 256-bit along with the new mobile graphics chip. The GeForce 7900 GS has 20 pixel processors, 7 vertex processors and is clocked at 375MHz, a relatively low clock-speed, something which should ensure very moderate power consumption of the new GPU. Nvidia advises to use 256MB of 1000MHz GDDR3 memory with 256-bit along with the new mobile graphics chip.

Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS and GTX-based laptops are currently available from Dell and Toshiba. Other partners that plan to ship the appropriate products soon include ABS, CyberPower, Falcon Northwest, Gateway, Hypersonic, iBuyPower, Velocity Micro, Vicious PC, and Voodoo PC in North America, as well as AJP, Evesham, Gericom, Multirama, Plaisio, and XS2 in Europ, according to Nvidia.
