poor performance in 3d games.

I played HL2 DM yesterday, first time for me to play it in quite a while (some months) and the framerate is choppy.. its down to 40-20 fps and there were only about 5 people on the map, i tried other servers and its the same.

I have reinstalled my chipset drivers, the game and even my video card drivers and its still the same it didnt used to be laggy like this before it was smooth as butter.

I have scanned for viruses and nothing, also adware.

anyone know why this has happened? i want to play it but its too choppy

Could be background processes taking up valuable system resources.

First, do an ad-aware scan, Ewide, Search & Destroy, etc.

If it helps, close everything that you don't need (Messenger, iTunes, Windows Media Player)...

I have closed programs on the taskbar, scanned using Ad aware and spybot, they found a few small things like tracking cookies but i deleted them.

Not made a difference to game performance though, ive even checked the task manager to see if anything was taking cpu time but nothing seemed to be.

I have had this problem before, but it was spyware causing it and i got rid of it and everything was fine. This time i have no idea what the cause is, im thinking about formatting as that will surely solve the problem if it isnt hardware related.. but i dont want to lose files so im still looking for a solution.

Are you playing on a map with large open areas, or small enclosed areas? Larger open areas tend to be a bit more laggy because there is more to render than in a small room/area.

What are your system specs?
What drivers are you running?
What resolution are you playing the game at?
Do you have AA/AF enabled? If so, try bringing them down at notch or two.
Do you have HDR enabled? If so, try disabling it.

I'm running into this same problem, however a re-format didn't fix it.

Rather than updating video drivers, try rolling back to the drivers of your card's release. I ran into the same problem with my system, rolled back to the card's reference drivers and it was pure bliss.
