pc game lagging
I just started to play computer games. I have installed a few demos first. They all lag. I dont know what the problem could be. I dont have a lot of stuff on my computer to take up space and I deleted my spy ware program. I have no clue what it could be. My computer is fairly new also so I doubt it is my video card.

Run dxdiag. Then, select 'Display' tab. You could see what kind of video card you have. On 'System' Tab you can see what is your computer specs.

did you buy it new or used? is it laptop or desktop? What kind of games are you going to play? If you plan to games, you might play it with low or medium setting because I bet your video card has lower memory clock.

I bought it new... and it is a desktop... I want to play any kind of games...3D games such as Call of duty or medal of honor or something. No matter what game it is the game lags. It works, but it plays extremely slow. I have no clue what it could be.

O ok. is it running Intel or AMD CPU? Run dxdiag, on 'System' tab you can see what kind of CPU you are running.

Yes, video card is the most importand parts in gaming. Here is my PC specs:
AMD 64 3200+ 2x- 512 MB PC3500 433 MHz ASUS A8V BFG 7800GS OC GDDR3 256 MB I am not sure if you could upgrade your video card because you have to take to PC Repair shop and ask them. |

I know the video card is important... but shouldnt a standard video card allow me to at least play normal games. I mean call of duty doesnt require a good video card.... and it still lags on my computer but on my friends it doesnt. And my computer is newer and faster then his.

It looks like you have SiS integrated video. This is probably the worst possible configuration for playing games. That graphics chip is for office applications, not games. Your friend's PC probably has a video card in it.
If there is an AGP slot, you can buy a decent video card for not too much money. If there is no AGP slot, you can still get a PCI card. Either way, it would be a huge improvement over the onboard video.

Probably, your friend computer is upgradable and also have fast video card. Hi Ho was right built-in video can't be use for game, it is for office application system. Check inside your PC, look for AGP port. If there is no AGP port, you still can afford PCI video card.

Is there any site that gives diagrams or step by step procedures on where to find the slot for a video card and how to install it?

I know everyone keeps asking you questions about specs. but what Model Compaq is it? It should say what model series it is on the front of the case. With this model number you can go to Compaqs website and usually find documentation on installing a videocard and whether or not you have a AGP or PCI-E slot and how to find it.
Also there is a link right here on pcmech.com about installing a videocard. The SIS onboard video was never designed for playing games. The processor that you have is also really was not built for playing games either. Based on the specs that you have given so far your computer was really built for just surfing the net, maybe playing music and some videos. I would recommend selling it and buying a real gaming machine if you want to play games. Compaq does not offer much upgrade options. Thanks. get me that model number of your computer and I will try and assist you in anyway that I can. |

I've looked that model number up and got about 3 or 4 different sets of component specs, so I think that number is a bit overused. Did you get it new? If so, how long ago?

A better bet would be a GeForce 6600 or, if you can come up with a little extra cash, a 6600 GT. I would definetely recommend the 6600 GT if you can. Mine has performed wonderfully in all the games I have played.
You will want to double check before you buy anything. The top slot in THIS picture is an AGP slot. Yours may be a different color. If you could possibly provide a picture, we could tell you for sure. |

I agree with Hi Ho. Anything less than a 6600 will leave you feeling like you are still lacking a bit in the area of graphical horsepower.

That brown slot right below the CPU fan is an AGP slot. You are in luck.

You must remember uninstall your current video card driver first. The point is follow procedure from your new video card.

You may not think that COD2 is all that difficult to run, but you'd be VERY surprised. It is a graphically very intense game to render. As mentioned, the 6600GT is the weakest video card I would recommend. It will give you playability at lower settings with good frame rates. If you want to maximize graphics quality, you will need to step up a bit to something like a 6800GS, 7800GS or X850 or above. In any event, you cannot expect the onboard graphics to give good playability with ANY new game.
