For a nice free game you could try Americas Army.

Hmmm well most people like it however I think Call of duty is vastly over rated. I mean it is a good game but for me I I don't see exceptional in it. Brothers in Arms is amuch better game in my opinion.
Americas Army is suppose to be good but i haven't tried it. ghost recon is an excellent series of games and they have just released a new one which looks and plays amazingly. Now there is C&C: First decade and Age of Empires 3 which aren't shooters but they are pretty good "war" games. At least they feature more aspects of confict than shooters do. |

Full Spectrum Warrior is an awesome squad based real time stragey
Call of Duty is fun, i never actually did like BiA. Americas Army is fun and worht it. Battlefield 1942 is an awesome awesome game for WWII. add the expan and ur set. Watch brothers in arms or something (that HBO series) and then play the game, reliving the series is pretty fun do. plenty of mods too. then Battlefield 2, more modern based, middle eastern and chinese and us, plus booster for european union and the expan the russians spetnaz and the MEC spec ops. rise of nations is still a fun RTS along with a classic (and a new one coming up for the series, Supreme Commander) Total Annilation (spelled worng)

Call of Duty, the United Offensive expansion, and Call of Duty 2 are all great WWII games. Medal of Honor Allied assault is a classic. I still play multiplayer all the time. I played the Brothers in Arms demo and I thought it was OK. I like COD better.
Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising and the Escelation expansion are similar to the Battlefield games. I like them better because the maps are limitless and when a good match with 150+ people gets going it's really fun!

Besides traditional FPS like CoD- there are also highly rated war RTS games that are highly rated. Also, the Tom Clancy war games (e.g., Ghost Recon) are also highly rated.

I liked Doom III as well...but it gets repetitive after awhile. I've always loved Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series too.

The Medal of Honor games and packs and Call of Duty, both of them. I never liked the demos of Full Spectrum Warrior or America's Army. I hated Battlefield 1942. I got it with something I bought and only played it about an hour and deleted it. My favorite all time is Half Life 2. And, though it isn't a war game, No One Lives Forever 2. Wierd but fun.

I think it comes down to whether or not you prefer single or multi-player games. Battlefield 1942/Vietnam/2 excells as a multi-player game, while Call of Duty is an excellent single-player game.

I never really liked Battlefield 1942. I never really liked Battlefield 2 either. I just never got into them. I really like Joint Operations though.
COD: United Offensive multiplayer is very fun, much better than COD. |

I've really only played COD2 multiplayer and the maps are just way too small. Maybe that's cause I came from the Battlefield series. |

I never got into BF2 either. Played for about a month and a half and just couldn't come to love the game. My favorite online multiplayer is actually Rainbow Six Ravenshield, but that game is definately dying now. Looks like my clan will be moving to GRAW (which isn't bad at all) as soon as they get the patch out that allows for adversarial team matches rather than grab and hold ground (ala BF2).

I'm the opposite with those two games. I love the Battlefield series but I hated Rainbox Six....I played the demo and just didn't like it.

I really hated all the Battlefield games too. I don't know what it was about them. I really liked the Call of Duty series, but they were only worth playing through one or two times through.

well, I can't play online with dialup so perhaps thats why I disliked those games. No one lives forever 2 was fun for me. I did win it but not without cheating in the last level. I later finished without cheating once I learned how to put those big ugly suckers out of commission. The wierdest thing in it was the guy riding around town on a tricycle with the guy on his shoulders. To those of you who never played the game,,,, that probably sounds very strange and it was.lol

It's crazy how good some of the players are. Kind of makes me lean towards not liking some of the games. Like getting shot everytime you spawn is no fun. That's why I like good shooting games in single player mode as long as the computer has decent AI.

I don't get why so many games do not have any type of spawn protection (do any?). The MOH server I play (the only one) is heavily modded and one of those mods is spawn protection which doesn't let you get killed for a few seconds or until you shoot your gun. While you're protected, you have a red glow around you. Wouldn't that make sense in all FPS games???

It makes a lot of sense but all the hard core players want to pad their stats unfortunetly. When I play BF2 I get really frustrated and end up stopping because of the constant spawn killing and that jump crouch move people do. I think they should make two areas. One for beginners and one for advanced. The beginners room can be modded to boot people off that try to pass themselves off as beginners.

True, but there are so many players online, you can quite simply choose another server. I mean I filter out servers in my view to the max and still get over 900 servers to choose from, (even though many servers I would like to join are maxed 64/64). BF2 has some disadvantages but it's overall gameplay (as infantry) rocks. It's weird where a game like C&C generals, I can lag with just 2 other players (all the time) yet in BF2 I can play with 63 other people with no lag at all. I get frustrated with the jumping and crouch moves ppl do too, but then I look at my results in then end and notice I get a 1.5/1 K/D ratio. So it sucks to be killed but you don't have much time to rejoice when it's you who does the killing. :P Also the 1st tier unlock shotguns that come with the Anti-Tank and Engineer classes stop the jumpers and crouchers in their tracks (funny to see them try to jump away from a shotgun), I can say with a smirk on my face that I OWN the bunny hoppers as AT class, even though my orignal priority was hunting down enemy tanks (though they still are). You can't avoid going down narrow corridors while trying to get good angles for incoming armor and the shotgun has become my friend when infantry suddenly suprises me in close combat. Back to Topic: I'm inclinded to say BF2, as I play it now. I'm a relative late comer (got the game mid-may) only because everyone I fixed computers for, seemed to have it. And it seems to be a common story for someone to have it. And I like multiplayer games. Although I come from a RTS background. oddly enough, C&C generals: Zero hour is also China vs USA vs Middle Eastern Co-alition of sometype. It's like crack I tells ya Was your question limited to FPS games??? Last edited by Smidget; 06-29-2006 at 11:51 PM. |
