DirectX and Video Card

I have a question that may solve another question posted in the Win98 forum. I just put in a Savage4 32meg AGP card in computer. It did several things, first, I had to keep readjusting the monitor, it would be off the screen and I'd have to dial it back in after playing a game. It played Combat Flight Sim fine, in Rogue Squadron I would get a line across, 2/3 the way up the screen. In F16 MRF It wouldn't play at all. So I give up and put back in the Voodoo2 1000 that worked fine with all the games. Unrelated to the video issue(I thought) I tried to open my CAD program and I get a C++ abnormal program termination. Microsoft says it my be a video issue. So I think back and I remember installing a game that installed DirectX 8. Well, 3dfx is dead and no drivers for DX8. Does anybody have any suggestions for getting the Savage to work differently (all Drivers are current) or can I go back to DX7. I thought I read somewhere that you can't. Everything worked fine until the DX8 install and video swap.
Any Help
Thanks
Randy

Hi Raf,

I'm still using 2 x Voodoo2s (with old 3dfx drivers Vx ver: 4.11.010015. Winglide Vers: 2.56.00.0459 )in my old 'puter with DX8 with no problems with games.

So older 3dfx drivers shouldn't cause too many problems. In fact I have got games like Shogun working with the 3dfx drivers when they didn't work with my Geoforce drivers.

Before you try and use DX buster, you could try re-installing DX 8.
By that I mean, don't try to uninstall it first, just run the set up program again so it overwrites the files in the existing DX folder.

Sometimes if I have graphical hitches after drivers updates, re-installing DX several times can help.

Did you try using the DX diagnostic program in the DX folder to see what it reports? It will show you if the cards and drivers are working. If the system locks when you try to start DX diagnostic, then again, that is the time to reinstall DX over itself

In fact I seem to remember reading that it is wise to reinstall DX after any graphic card changes or driver updates.

Worth a try.

HTH,

Mike

F-16 MRF doesn't support Direct3d... only Glide or Software rendering, so you won't have a good experience with that card and that game title. The other games you mentioned though, I believe should run fine on that card. Possibly a patch or updated drivers would fix that problem.

Is your mobo using VIA chipset ?
Your problem has some similarity with mine and after trying almost everything, it was a chipset problem which a simple update solves the DX problem.

Thanks to everyone I did finally get it to work and it was a mobo update that seemed to help the most.
