Hi CroniC, welcome to the PC Mech forums!
Do you mean that you are looking to get a new computer for gaming? The best solution is to build your own. What type of games will you be playing?

You should consider buying something for future use as well.

Ok then you want a board that uses the 4x agp video card,
Preferably nvidia 32mg or more and since connection speed is important I would get a DSL connection. If you plan on building your own somebody here can give you a system breakdown. When asking it is good to suggest the budget you are working with because the sky is the limit. I mean some video cards can run up to $500 each. But you can get yourself a good system for under a thousand dollars. |

CroniC,
Here are my recommendations for system parts: Motherboard: EPoX EP-8K7A ($115.00) The best DDR board at the moment. Simple to setup and stable. Processor: AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz 266MHz ($107.00) Currently the fastest Athlon, will be great for games. Memory: Crucial 256MB PC2100 DDR ($35.99) 256MB is just about the right amount for gaming. If you really want you can up it to 512MB but I don't think it will help that much. Sound Card: Sound Blaster Live! ($32.00) or Turtle Beach Santa Cruz ($65.00) The SB Live! was the most popular and still is to some extent, but the TBSC is also a good card. Video Card: GeForce 3 ($283.00) or Radeon 8500 ($299.00). Either one will work great, I'm partial to ATi. Hard Drive: IBM 40GB ATA100 7200 RPM ($103.00) IBM and Maxtor make the best drives. CD-ROM/CD-RW: Sony 52X ($30.00) and Plextor (choose speeds) Those are the basics, it will make for a great gaming system. Make sure you have ample cooling too (big case, min. 2 80mm fans). Hope that helps. |

Quote "Video Card: GeForce 3 ($283.00) "Wow It`s still $499 in stores around here! To think I wasted half of that price on a GF2 MX400. Oh it can go in the kids box hehe. BTW is that with tv-out?? For $1500 you should be able to build a nice box. I plan on trying an Athlon for my next box. Intel has got enough of my dough

since I don't build 'em myself .....
I decided to go with Alienware's Aurora DDR - It's on order now so I wont have the machine till towards the end of October. I'm a mom, w/kids and house to run so my hobby is gaming on something pre-built - I just don't have the inclination or smarts to build my own
Maybe someday i'll mess around with this old Dell P2 i'm using now - like upgrade the vid card -- This old system goes to the kids playroom for Barbie Magic hairstyler type software ! ![]() Anyway -- I got the works and warranty was important to me, with 2 yrs tech support - 1.4 Athlon 266 FSb 384 DDR SDRAM NVIDIA Ge force 3 w/64 MB DDR tv-out 4x AGp Soundblaster 5.1 X-gamer Klipsch ProMedia speakers 16X / 40xDVD w/software MPEG-2Decoder CD-RW Plexwriter16x/10x/40x 3com etherlink 10/100 PCi US Robotics v.90 56k voice/fax/data XP home edition Monitor is a NEC 19" black FE950+ multisync flat Free shipping was a nice added touch. They really work with you at Alienware and I called EVERYWHERE for weeks before they earned my business. I found the monitor for cheaper on another site, sent the salesperson the link to it and he said they would ship it all for free to make up for the price difference. I have my fingers crossed all turn out well when i get my new rig. Good luck on your new computer, too - this forum is full of such knowlegable, humorous and very helpful folks! I love it
