Nintendo Wii

I thought I'd get everyone's opinion on the Nintendo Wii now that its been out for awhile and is finally making its way onto retailers' shelves.

I picked one up this morning because the Target I work for finally got a shipment in, which is something special since we've gotten so few. Envisioning a mad rush at 8 am (they were in the sales flyer today) I came an hour early only to find one person even remotely concerned over purchasing one. The last shipment we had sold out before noon, with the one before that selling within five minutes. So, I was kind of disgusted to find that when I left at 5 pm today we had sold less than a dozen consoles - I could have slept in this morning and still been able to have picked one up. As to why they're not selling as well? I'm wanting to believe poor advertisement is to blame, though I'm also beginning to wonder if the craze has finally died down as well.

Anyway, it has been the first console since the original Nintendo that even my parents have gotten fully immersed in. I'm talking about head over heels immersion. Having moved back home for the summer, my family and I played Wii Sports for nearly three hours this evening. My parents were the ones who kept wanting to play game after game.

So, despite this rather long post, who has a Wii, who enjoys their Wii, and who is looking forward to getting one?

It's ok. The games are generally full of quick fun and instant satisfaction - just as Nintendo is known for. I'd be very hard pressed to say that it will have a great RPG fanbase though. I think the more expansive games will be left to the ps3 once developers shell the clams to make a long game (now that the blu-ray format offers so much more space). I also think that xbox live is what is keeping the xbox "alive". The three systems tend to each have their individual perks, but given time, I think the ps3 will come out on top with ease.

Please take into consideration that I've played each system and don't want to purchase any of them. I'm 100x happier with my PSP than those other systems.

I think Microsoft and Sony have lost their way when it comes to games, Nintendo is right on in my book by creating fun games to play. There's no imagination with Microsoft/Sony which in my book creates dull games with pretty eye candy.

I've never had a "game box" of any type other than a PC. I've heard nothing but good about the Wii that's tempting me to get one.

I like mine. I quit messing with consoles a few years ago, but when I saw the Wii in action I had to have one.

The games are fun and the console features itself are pretty neat. Not to mention it brings me back to my youth with all the "old school" Nintendo type games that I grew up playing.

I would recommend one to anyone.

Once I find one at the regular price in stock at a local store, I plan on getting one as well. It will be the first gaming console since the Super Nintendo for me.

Very tempting, I must admit.

It appears that the Wii has given nintendo a second renaissance of sorts.

I love my Wii. I was actually the 17th person in my area to get one. I'm sad to say this but I camped for that console. I went to Wal-Mart and said if there was still room in line I would wait, and 'lo and behold, there was room. So i grabbed my school work out of the car and did all my thanksgiving break HW in the 11.5 hrs I waited. (So I did somthing productive while I sat there) I got it for Zelda and Mario. Those have been the only console games I REALLY enjoy. It took me about 5 minutes to learn the controls. It loads just fine. And I do like being able to purchase older games and DL them to my console. I just bought super paper mario on friday and it is a terrific game. The only downside to a wii imo is controllers and add-ons are expensive. (ie Wifi adapter, etc) Backward compatible with any GameCube game. Uses SD mem cards. Small.
I would recomend it over any other console without hesitation. And I don't like consoles, (they went downhill after the 64) I'm a "hardcore" PC game fan.

I do have a question fo other wii owners, is the blue led aound the disc drive supposed to stay on? (Srry if thats a hjx, delete that part if you need to)

Darth, the blue ring means your Wii is ready for an update. Jump online with it to download the latest.

I suppose that shows I'm also a Wii owner. I enjoy mine. Its a fun way to relax without just laying on the couch.

Yeah I did that, but when I see the commercials and ads it always shows the light around the disc drive on. Is it always like that?

Thats just for the ads. It is not supposed to stay on. It only shows up for the Update, then goes away after.

I wondered that myself, especially when mine only flashed once - it came with the most up-to-date firmware so I was set.

I think I'm having a bit of a lucky streak (not including my recent concussion).... just ran across Mario Party 8 which I'm told is as hard to get as the Wii itself, I came, I saw, I bought, and before they hit the shelf, all 18 copies were gone.

The LED will also flash if you have a new message from a friend, or if they send you something such as a Mii.

My lady's gonna get me a Wii eventually. I see the other consoles and computer gaming as more of a solitary activity. Since I'm getting married soon, my "me" time is going to dwindle to infinitesimal proportions so if I want to game, it'll have to be a game that she'll play too. The Wii is the only console that would offer those kind of fun games.

That has to stink, just to have those games sitting there taunting you...

I must have jinxed myself because I threw the stinking remote three times today while playing Wii tennis. After finally getting the controls down I was kind of getting into it a little too much...and without that wrist strap, well, yeah.

You're right Stuey, I thought Nintendo's marketing of the Wii being "everyone's" gaming console, even non-gamers, was pretty ridiculous...but it's not. Even my grandmother was playing the bowling game today.

I thought the Wii would be lame after all the advertising... then I thought it would be lame when I saw them in what you in the US call a mall, with all the little kids hanging around. Even thought it would be lame when I first had my mates controller in my hand, but gee whiz was I wrong. Such simple games (I've only played the sports games it comes with), but so immersive and an easy way to kill a few hours.

I'm mainly a multiplayer person (as in like against 6-64 over the internet).

I thought the wii didn't have an online option?? I may be out of the loop here. I was actually waiting for them to incorporate this before I thought of purchasing one. Do they have one now? and can you play multiplayer games online?

Then again, even without multiplayer, I was thinking of getting one when all the hype died down and the supply decent. Which may be soon.

And if I don't like it; It's off to my nephews.

I subscribe to G4TechTV and they review games for all platforms all the time so I knew I would be intrested for a long time now. However I miss quite a few reviews and updates to consoles all the time.

Well it has the wireless card built in, which allows you to browse the internet via it's supplied Opera browser, and updates your weather forecasts. It also lets you download old Nintendo games, although their selection is extremely lacking. Only four or five N64 games!

I don't know about online gaming though, I've never even thought about it.
