Unreal Tournament

Help. There arre two additions, regular and "Game of the Year". I like the "gamee of the year" edition, because it is a few bucks cheaper and has the tactical ops mod, but is it missing something from the regular version?

No, they're both the same, Game of the Year just has a few add-ons, and was the last version released.

I have just opened Tourney and for some reason the Menu bar at the top isn't there, when I press ESC it changes to a black background and when i press ESC again it changes to the normal Grey background but with NO MENU??

Any ideas?

What vid card?

Also, what desktop color depth are you using and what color depth in UT?

Make sure they're the same, if they're different the game will crash. If you haven't, download the 4.36 patch for the game from www.unrealtournament.com

It fixes alot of issues with the game if you aren't using a 3dfx card. You might also download Direct X 8.0a from www.microsoft.com/directx . You'll get a bit more performance from it versus DX 7.

I am using a Nvidia Riva TNTII 32MB card, my settings for desktop are 1024x768x32bit

and for Tourney they were 800x600x32. How can I check/change these without being able access the menu bar??

Oh btw, if I put the mouse to the top of the screen I can see the helptips for the menu at the bottom of the screen (This menu allows you to start a new game and quit, this menu allows you to change settings etc etc)

Thanks for the help,

You'll have a hard time running UT in 32 bit mode. Try running in 16 bit and see if it makes any difference.

\\UnrealTournament\System\UnrealTournament.ini

All of the video settings are in there, under [***renderer888] sections. Just change the defaults to whatever you want to use.

You could also start the game in "safe-mode". When it crashes the next time it launches it should give you that option.

[UMenu.UnrealConsole]
RootWindow=UMenu.UMenuRootWindow
UWindowKey=IK_Esc
ShowDesktop=True

[UMenu.UMenuMenuBar]
ShowHelp=True
GameUMenuDefault=UTMenu.UTGameMenu
MultiplayerUMenuDefault=UTMenu.UTMultiplayerMenu
OptionsUMenuDefault=UTMenu.UTOptionsMenu
ModMenuClass=UMenu.UMenuModMenu

I searched for MENU and that's what I have in my UnrealTournament.ini file, does anybody know if any of these settings would prevent my menu from being shown??

If not, IS there a setting which can turn off the top bar??

Thanks,

No, it's likely a resolution and/or color depth setting your monitor or vid card just doesn't like.

Start the game, then ctrl-alt-del and kill it immediately after. When you start it the next time, it should give you some options. Choose 'safe mode' and then set a different resolution and try 16 bit color instead of 32.

I don't know of anyone that runs unreal in 32bit mode. It was written for 16bit, from what I understand. My friend that sold me unreal tournament had me set it for 32 bit the first time we installed it, just to show me, and it crashed. I never put it on 32 bit.

Question:
Does unreal tournament have a fps benchmark built in like Quake?
I have heard that it does, but have not found out how to activate it.

Just ran it. Boy, I love my geforce 3. With 4 pass anti-aliasing on and everything else up to max, I averaged 75 fps and that was with internet explorer operating in the background.

I'm green with envy! I can't wait for my GeForce 3. Although I may wait for the Ultra!

I'm getting abour 75-78 FPS with my GeForce 2 GTS, P3 900 and 256 megs of Ram at 1024 X 768 16 bit with AA turned off. I'll have to try out that FSAA and see if there is a noticable difference.

Here's the kicker, I ran it in D3D, not opengl. That is fast for D3D, if I'm not mistaken. The only thing I can think of that would improve the geforce 3 is maybe more memory(imagine a 128mb card) or maybe another processor. No one that hasn't seen this thing run it's own demos can truly appreciate what it can do. When you download the chameleon demo from the web, it's normally just a small movie. When you use the actual demo, it constantly changes color, texture, walking along the vine and you can pan the camera around or move the light source around and there is never the slightest hitch. The other demos are equally impressive. The geforce 3 I have came with my computer and didn't come with the demos. For the first couple of weeks, I wasn't that impressed with it; I kept trying to find ways to be displeased--I was a die hard Voodoo fan. When I got hold of the demos for the geforce 3, I was amazed. There is no other card like it. The video cards that my friends own run the gamut of all the best name brands, from voodoo5 to geforce 2 gts and so on and so forth. None of them were able to run these demos with anything approaching the visual splendor of the geforce 3. Viva la Nvidia.
