Error Message When Trying To Install Civ IV

I figured I'd give this a shot on here, since I don't know when I'll be hearing back from tech support at this other site.
I purchased Civilization IV off of www.direct2drive.com, so I could download it without having to go to the store. I downloaded the executable file they have, and every time I then try to run it I get an error message. I figured the that file got corrupted during the download, so I deleted it and downloaded the file again. I still got the same error message. Here it is:

>SetupNew\setup.cpp (138)
PAPP:
PVENDOR:
PGUID:
$
@Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) IE 7.0.6000.16473

I went through all of the recommendations on their site, like clearing out your temp folder, have nothing else running during the download, and make sure my computer is completely up to date. I did all of this and have downloaded the file 3 different times now, and I keep getting the same error message. The first two times I downloaded it through Internet Explorer, like they recommended, and the third time I downloaded it through Firefox. I'd appreciate any comments or insight as to what this error message even means and what I'm doing wrong. Thanks.

It's an InstallShield error and I did find a few threads you might want to read up on.

The problem has dogged quite a few games, FEAR, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Oblivion in addition to Civ 4 . It's mentioned here as well : http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?t=160892

Pam123, thank you for your help. I kept working on it last night and ended up running across those same sites that you listed. I've done everything that they suggested, and I still am having the same problem.
One thing I noticed is that when I tried to run Install Shield's Update Manager, I do get a script error problem. Every time I run it I almost always get an Internet Explorer Script Error. I tell it to keep running scripts and nothing ever loads up. Every once in a while, it will load up all the way with no problem, but this has been very rare. I mention this just in case there might be some connection.
I've done everything from completely remove the Install Shield program and reinstalling it. I tried updating all the different versions to no avail as well. I've cleaned out the temp folders, and I still can't even open the file. It doesn't even start to run, I double click it and the error message comes up immediately. I've run out of ideas.

I think you've covered just about everything.
Wait another day or two to see if the techs at direct2drive get back to you but otherwise you're looking at a repair reinstall or a reformat, depending on what disks HP has given you with that computer or that you created when you first set it up.
Anything you can't risk losing should be backed up.

Thanks again for responding. I'm dreading any kind of OS reinstall. Does it matter that I can install other games and programs just fine? I tried installing the game on another computer I have, and I got the same error message there too. This all seems to make it sound like a problem with the file, but as I stated earlier I've downloaded it 3 times now and it shouldn't be a corrupted download. I will wait on what direct2drive says, but I don't really know how much more they can help.

Hold up on the format then.
If there's something wrong with the file direct2drive has to fix it or give you a refund.

Just a final update if anyone cares; it turned out to be a problem on direct2drive's end. They didn't say what the issue was but just that I needed to download it again. Another hour and a half later and I was able to install the game just fine. I had been downloading an .exe file but this time it was a zip file. I think next time I'll just drive to the store. Thanks for all your help pam.

civ IV problem

Not sure if anyone else is having this issue, but I've installed Civ IV on my new Vista pc and as the game loads it stops at the 'Checking XML' screen and then windows tells me that Civ IV has stopped working. I read somewhere else that it could be related to a driver on the sound card but I have already downloaded the latest driver and still no go.

I'm expecting a (another) patch for Window's gamer to turn up any day (week?) now for Vista/XP.
I don't think this : http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=185655
is all there is to it.
