Talking Bioshock

I have been playing this game for a couple days, and I haven't seen many opionons on it...with the excpetion of the 360 demo.

This game is simply amazing. IGN has a great review and is right on with it. The game has an immersive story, invintive game play, and a very involved atmosphere. I was so into the game (which makes me jump a little as is) that my wife came up behind me and put her hands on my shoulders and scared the living daylights out of me.

It is an FPS, but you have different weapons that need to be upgraded and body modifications that need to be upgraded. It has a RPG feel to it if you will.

The story is great so far, and is done mostly through narratives, and found audio diaries. This means that you dont have to stop game play to read through stories and such. I do suggest going back over the audio diaries, and radio messages when you find quite tucked away places just incase you missed something.

The environment and atmosphereic noise is also great. You wear headphones or crank up your surround sound and you really do feel like you are there.

For those looking for a game of the year in the making this is is. It is using the new unreal engine so I am really excited to see Unreal 3.

PCPowerplay gave it a rating of 100/100... they said the only thing it was worse than was your own private water theme park

I've heard the music is fantastic, but it hasn't been released over here yet (not that I've seen anyway)... what did you think of it?

Sounds like it'll be a pretty good game.

THe music really helps add to the atmosphere. I really havent been paying that much attention to it other than the occasional "that makes it all the more eerie" thought.

If I remember right, that's one of the things that made System Shock 2 so good: the eerie, fitting "music."

System Shock 2 is still one of my all time favorite games. You can sure try it, making a restore point first, of course. I don't think you'd have any trouble.

Speaking of install problems, I may not get Bioshock after all! Pam123 just posted this link in another thread:

after this post i paid a little bit more attention to the music. It is very time period oriented and fits nicely. really adds to the feel.

That really is upsetting about the DRM malware. I already installed it and I can attest to the AVG finding it as a trojan. It sucks but I like the game. It really doesnt affect my computer. I just have to ignore the the AVG warnings.

Bought the game, and must say it is very well made and fun to play. 100/100 is a little much (I'd say 9/10), but it definitely is a contender for game of the year.

Even with all the hype over the game, though, there are still little problems strewn throughout. I'm no techie but it makes you wonder how they could miss these things that I found within an hour of playing he game. For example, the voices/dialogue are great, but the characters mouths don't even match the speech, and don't make realistic movements anyways. Another thing is the water effects. It's supposed to be one of the things they're "most proud of" in the game, but you'll often see the structure lines in it (hard to explain).

I think the biggest problem with the game, though, is the *(#$*#&( hacking. You have to constantly hack machines with the same pipedream-style minigame over and over and over. meh.

Still, I'm a nit, and the game really is a blast. Great story, great graphics, great gameplay, and all pretty original. Well worth the ~$50 CAD I bought it for, I just hope that future games (crysis wink wink nudge nudge) that are similarly hyped don't have similar problems.

I love the pipe dream hacking. One thing though, sometimes when I'm hacking a bot it will short circuit and start attacking me. Seems random, maybe i'm missing something.

I just bought it for 360.

The pipe thing does get repetitive, and can get pretty hard too. I've died like 3 times already from the thing "overloading".

Theres a comparision video on Game Trailers comparing the DX10 and Xbox 360. Looks pretty much the same, except the water texture looks improved on the DX10 version.

Its defiently fun, but twoards the end the increased health of the splicers gets kind of ridiculous, when you have to shoot someone with a upgraded shotgun 4-5 times at almost point blank range, its kind of unrealistic. Theres other ways to make things more difficult, like imporving their AI or giving them some basic plasmids or something. Thats my only real complaint of the whole game.

This dosen't deal with the game, but I wish Xbox would support 1680X1050 resolution. If anyone else plays their xbox on a 20 or 22" moniter, they know what I'm talking about.

It'll be a long time before I go DX10. My 4800+ X2 is kickin' strong and my 800 AGP is still playing current games pretty good. The other main reason is I still don't want Vista.... Even if it were a PCI-E card, it's an AIW and Vista doesn't support ATI's AIWs...

Just noticed something guys, the wrench kicks major ass, even far into the game. There are alot of power ups for it, many of which you get by researching Bouncer's and buying with Adam.

RESEARCH RESARCH RESEARCH I cant say it enough. I kill spider slicers in ONE hit with my wrench and have a 35% chance to freeze. I'm sure theres more power ups for it I haven't gotten yet, but don't ever think the wrench is useless, because its far from it. My wrench does at least 10 times the damage of my pistol. I wish the guns were more powerful later in the game.

Has anyone played through it? Man did it seem to go fast!! WOW!

Loved the game, the pipe hacking did seem to get repetetive, the visuals were awesome-(xp,dx9), the story line was somewhat different from other games I've played-(for me anyway) and definately kept my interest. I really liked it!!

I just wish it was longer.

Oh well, I guess I'll have ta play it again.

I just read, in Maximum PC I think, that it reminded them of System Shock 2. SS2 is one of my all time favorite games Is that so?? -- if so, I may just get it sooner then waiting for the big price drop like most games have in 6 - 8 months...

Well it's the same people who made SS2, so it's bound to have some similarities. I've never played SS2 myself though, so I wouldn't know for sure.

If you ever run across it in the bargain bin, check it out. The "music" was fantastic, filled the mood quite well and help make the game "scary." The graphics for the time were awesome. If Doom 3 was 1/3 as scary, it would have been a decent game.

Years ago I heard that Looking Glass, the makers of SS2 went out of business for some reason like they marketed the game themselves instead of going thru a distributor or the like; SS3 was to never happen.

Also heard that "someone" picked up most of the programmers. I guess that might be the folks who made Bioshock but I haven't heard any real rumors to the effect...

Yes you can run SS2 on Vista.
The folks at TTLG (home of the "Thief" games also) have been doing a little work : http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112036

I rented it for the 360 the other day and just got to play it this morning. I have to say, it's the first game in a long time that has really kept my attention (the demo doesn't really give it justice, especially after you get telekinesis). I've even yet to find a drop in fps, and the 360 version looks just as good as the pc version in dx10 (to me at least). Heck, I'd still be playing it right now if it weren't for football being on. I'm sticking wth the 360 version though until I can make use of EVGA's step-up program and replace my 8600 GT (which I've come to find isn't too great in Vista).

I might go back to a dual-boot to see what kind of framerate I get in XP.

im playing bioshock in dx10 with an 8800gts and it looks beautiful; but man this game doesnt even need the graphics, its all about the totally in depth story; and thats how it should be.
