Cool Old Game on new Computer?

I'm trying to get an old game to play on my computer. This game is called "Thief" which came out in the late 90's. I used to play it on Windows 98 SE. I'm now trying to play it with Windows XP Home, with the latest Direct X Drivers and a new video card.
The game required Direct X 6.0, when it came out.

I can get the game to start with very low resolution and quality, but if I set one of the video settings which is called "Hardware", ON/OFF, to on, the screen goes dark, I can still here the sound. I then hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of the game. What I find in my desktop, is an error message as below.

Error" Direct 3d device drive does not accurately report texture memory usage" Conatact your accelerator vendor for updated drivers"

Is there anyway of getting this old game to work?

Thanks guys!

First thing is to look for any patches/updates for the game.

Next, try running in compatibility mode for Win98. Right click on the .exe for the game and head over to Properties. Click the Compatibility tab and set it up in the box.

Finally, check that your video card drivers are indeed up to date.

If all else fails you can always install Virtual PC and then install win 98 se in there and run it form within. I use a dos VPC to play old games from time to time.

There's a site for taffers here : http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031
They've got complete instruction on how to set up and run the older Thief games on 2K, XP and Vista along with game patches.
