DOOM 3 + 8800 GTX + 2 LCD = 8 fps
I thought this was hilarious and that I would share. Just build a decent machine and decided to install all of my favorite games and test them compared to my old P4, ATI X800 PRO rig (Still a god RIG BTW)
These are the average results at high settings on Stock - OH! and dual monitor set up: Counter Strike Source, HL2 and every valve game over 150 Frames per Second (FPS) FEAR over 100 FPS Bioshock Never below 80 FPS FarCry over 100 FPS And the games looks awesome..... but Drum Roll please..... Doom 3 Highest FPS 30 to 40 when staring at a wall, 8 FPS yes 8 FPS when walking around. Apparently after some searching around Doom 3 does not like dual screens, you'd think a 3 year old game would have some sort of patch to fix things like this but no.

Since .1% of gamers use two screens I don't forsee developers putting much effort into supporting them. Can't imagine how well that works, with your cross hairs right between monitors.

Agreed... I would use 3 screen or one for a game, but never 2... that's where the focal point of the game is

just to answer you guys.
It's XP. Games on a dual monitor set up do NOT use both screens, It only uses one, the primary screen. Like I said in my original post, every other game works flawlessly at high FPS rates. I hope this does not diminish your witty responses. |

The game basically doesn't see the second screen. It will just open normally on the primary monitor. The second one continues to display the desktop as it would without a game running.
Fibre, does the game run better if you disable your secondary screen prior to running the game?

So that's how you do it! I've always had a need to be able to see my desktop while playing a game. Now I can shoot aliens and play solitaire AT THE SAME TIME!
I feel complete now.

Sorry for the super delayed response, i thought this thread was dead,
To answer some of your newer questions, Disabling the 2nd monitor does not improve your FPS (unless your running Doom 3 , C&C generals and mabey some other titles). Most games only use the Primary monitor and ignore any other unless you specify it in the Video Card's software - but that would hurt your FPS. I have 2 monitors because I work in the graphics industry, I work with 3D, PhotoShop, Flash, After effects and all that good stuff. Sometimes I need 2 of the apps open at the same time to make workflow easier. It's a pain with one monitor. As for playing Solitaire while Gaming, well as cool as that sounds its pretty much impossible, your mouse is locked onto the Primary monitor when the game is active. Anyway ID should make their games run like every other high-end game out there and have it be able to run on a dual monitor set up. |
