Win2k, depending on video card drivers.
The stability is as good as you'll get from a Windows OS, and if the game won't run in Win2k chances are the game kinda sucks anyways. If game developers can't put enough effort into their games to get them working in anything except certain versions of Win98, I don't need to buy their games. The ATI Radeon line seems noticably slower in Win2k for me, whereas Voodoo/Geforce cards are about the same. ATI needs to work on their driver support and compatibility as well. I won't have a Win98 machine in my house .

I mostly play all versions of Unreal and Unreal Tournament, I have 3 pent based pc's and have win 98,2000pro and ME....the ME seems do make better use of ram but I still get lockups....the 2000 wont play the new inf version of UT and it seems to me to have alot of system crap running (dont know how to shut that down yet) I guess I am most comfortable with 98 only because I have had more time with it.....XP? I have heard so many gaming people say good and bad things about it....btw I am in the process of building my first rig (AMD 1.4) is there a big dif in OS for processors? More input guys!!!
Thanx! |

DOS games? Win95/98 works just fine.
As far as OS's and processors go, there shouldn't be any big difference between what OS you have and what processor you decide to run it on

My old answer was Win 98/ME ...... but that has changed since moving to WinXP Pro. I had probs using Win 2000 ............ but XP works great , and is alot more stable.... i.e. I would need to re-boot WinME every few days after gaming alot on-line.

windows ME.. becuase it crashes very rarely (for me anyway)
also system restore is a usefull tool if you go to a LAN party and your freind messes up your computer because the he doesnt know what he is doing.. you can just restore and fix most of the problems i havnt had hands on experience with windows XP.. but it looks like its pretty stable.. i just wanna be able to play dos games also (but i can live without them) |

ME? wow, I don't think so...
Hi,
I really don't believe my eyes. ME, for anything? I am not trying to start a personal attack, ok. But I have used ME since it came out, and it has crashed at least 4 times. and when I say crashed, I mean fdisk crash...as in format the drive. I would not trust ME with anything important. Some may be my fault as I really mess around with things. But then I run 98 and 98 2nd ed. and 2000. and am just as hard on them . I have 1 pc with 98 since it came out in, oh when was that? I think it was around 1998. And it still is running fine. I built a new machine and put 2000 on it, but had a lot of problems with drivers. There may be a better selction now. I have a VooDoo5, that I couldn't get working. I have a VooDoo3 in the other 2000 and it works fine. Now here is the strange part. I play most of my games on ME. But I keep copies of my saves somewhere else. Just in case. ME boots way faster, I hope XP does. Now I need to figure out which XP to go with. Ant suggestions? |

It is my understanding that the only real difference between XP pro and home is smp support, and the 64 - bit flavor is , I believe, out of the question for those who are not engineers.

98se, ive tried running XP, it is very stable but it doesnt play many of my fav games from 2 or 3 yrs ago. if you want to be able to play your games like delta force2, superbike2001 and ultima online or third dawn, dont bother with XP
