Original DooM... no sound

Felt like playing some good old fashion DooM (and DooM II, and Final DooM for Win 95) but there is no music sound. I have sound effects (gun fire, monster noise, door sounds, etc).

Running XP Pro SP2, and running the game in Win 95 compatibility mode.

Any ideas?

TIA

You may have to play this one with the DOSBox emulator

I might have to play with it more, but it is giving me trouble. It doesn't work with Doom for Win 95 as it's not a DOS executable. So, I tried it with DukeNukem 3D, and got the error the tokens are too big.

Any thing else to try?

I have played it successfully in a dos 3.22 virtual pc. It didn't recognize my mouse though. I think you will need a ps/2 mouse if you are using usb.

Is the music turned on/up?

I have to ask, because it is easy to overlook the simple stuff.

With that old stuff, the music is probably midi. Today's onboard sound handles midi a lot differently than the Soundblasters those games were designed for.

Is that a stand alone program, or are you meaning you installed DOS in a MS Virtual PC?

That's always a good question! Yep, I checked.

Ya, either the sound effects or the music is midi, and the other isn't. I'm running an Audigy 2 in this box (which isn't really a "sound blaster") if that helps.

An Audigy should handle midi fine - but you may need to change the way it handles it, try different preferred midi playback devices in control panel, sounds and multimedia. You probably have several to choose from.

Cool!! That works just fine for DooM for Win 95 ! -- I have 6 choices under the Audio tab, 5 of which are Audigy xxx, and one that is MS GS Wavetable SW Synth. I tried the MS one and it works.

Thank you.

Now that I remember DukeNukem 3D, which is DOS, how do I get that one working?

That sure would make me a happy camper!

I'll check into that, glc. "Blood" was a blast, too

sgtspector, the sound works fine? I might play with that, too... now to find my old DOS diskettes.

Hey Nuclear Krusader!! Long time no see - - I kinda stopped looking for them. I still have a few more boxes to go thru. I'm amazed how quickly I found the 6.0 floppies, though. ??? Oh well (just thought of another place too look...)

Thanks for the links, faulkner132 I'll be playing with this more when I have time. I do want to get to playing Duke3D and Blood, but now that DooM for Win 95 is working, I'll probably play that for a while, until I wear it out again.
