Boom Directx Nightmare!!

Hi,

I am having problems with my computer restarting when I try to play a game.

I think it has something to do with Directx. When I try to run the DxDiag.exe the DxDiag screen comes up for a couple of seconds but then it restarts the computer.

I have tried Directx 6.0, 7.0, & 8.0 and they all do the same.

I have an ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo AGP Graphics card and have downloaded the latest drivers from ATI.

Any ideas are welcome

Thanks

Hi Digger,

Where are you getting your versions of DX?

If you haven't already, download the full version of DX 8.00 from Microsoft and try that. I've come across versions that come with games and coverdisks that do not load the Runtime components.

I would suggest doing a full uninstall of the Video Drivers.

First change your video adapter to Standard Display Adapter. Right click on Desktop>Properties>Settings tab>Advanced Properties> Adapter tab. Click the Change button and at the bottom, click the "Show All Devices". In the left pane, scroll up to the top and choose Standard Display Types. In the right pane, choose Standard Display Adapter (VGA). Click OK.

Then boot into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when the PC boots. Remove Nvidia drivers thro Add/Remove programs.

Then to the Registry.
Go to Start and Run and type regedit. Press Ok. Double click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to open it up, then SOFTWARE. If it still exists, delete the Nvidia Corporation key by right clicking on it and choosing Delete. Exit Regedit

Then clean up any leftover files.
Go to Start>Find>Find Files &Folders. Do a search for these files:
In C:\Windows\System: nv*.*
In C:\Windows\Inf: nv*.inf
In C:\Windows\Inf\Other: nv*.inf
Delete the ones you find in those folders. Be careful you just delete the ones with "nv", nothing else.

Reboot. Load DX 8.00, and then reinstall your video drivers.

See if that helps.

N.B. I forgot to make clear in the above post that although I am describing a clean install for NVidia drivers, the principle applies to most other brands.
In case anyone was wondering why I was plonking on about NVidia drivers for aqn ATI card.
