Weird glide problem
I have a video game (gp500 by microprose) that I have played for a year or more on my system. I have Voodoo3 2000. I always played in glide mode because of better performance and better quality. I haven't played it in 2-3 months but I had played it hundreds of times before that with no problem. I have added no new hardware to my machine. Now, if I start the game in glid mode, after the 2 intro splash screens, the screen is just white (16 bit color 1024x768 screen setting). The game runs fine but the screen is white. if I set my vide settings to a different color or resolution, I get a hoIribly distorted screen (looks like scrambled video or something) and I can see what is supposed to be in the upper left of the screen in the very edge of the bottom right of the screen. And that small section is clear and not scrambled looking. I have tried many different drivers and re-installed the game. Does anyone have any ideas? I have an FIC AD11 mb, 1.0GHz Athlon, 226MB DDR RAM.

Have you added any software? A common thing to do would be to reinstall the software or upgrade the drivers. I've had a problem with my voodoo2 "forgetting" it was there, but a driver upgrdade/reinstall did the trick.

i have re-installed many different drivers (drivers that I knew worked before) and re-installed the game too. I wish I had something else that would test the glide operation of my card because gp500 is the only glide game i have.

Here's a page full of Glide screensavers. Download one or two of them and see if your 3D card is working.

Also, test the card and drivers using DX>Diag. If it passes all the tests then the card and drivers should be ok.
I think everytime you change video drivers you should reinstall DX afterwards. So try reinstalling DX. Last edited by mike breck; 10-11-2001 at 09:14 AM. |

I tried many screen savers and they all worked but they are all DirectX or OpenGL (which work in games). The one that I found that was Glide, DX, and OpenGL (Voodoo Lights)would only run Glide on Voodoo2, not Voodoo3. I tried running DXDiag and it ran fine, but I don't see how this helps diagnose a Glide problem. However, I am not too sharp when it comes to what the differences are between these 3.

Well it shows the card is working and lists any problems with the drivers.
Can you play the game in Direct3D? If you can't get a screensaver, then another way to check whether the card and drivers are at fault is to purchase another game that can use glide e.g. Unreal, or UT. Most of these games are now being released under budget labels in the UK for $10 or under. I presume it's the same in the US. So it won't break the bank to buy one. Also it gives you an excuse to buy another game. |
