Xwave 7100 and Redneck Rampage

I am trying to install Redneck Rampage(DOS game), but it won't play sound. In the setup program the sound tests no good when run in DOS, but it is ok in a dos window. If I try to run the game without sound, it works, but with sound it won't start. If you've ever played this the sound makes the game.

The error is something like, error in connecting to sound card possibly conflicting DMA channels. I tried all available, but no luck.

Here is what I've done so far:
1) Installed DOS sound driver.
2) Tried every sound card option in setup, one at a time.
3) Confirmed the game runs without sound.
4) Tried going to DOS by myself first and then running the game.

Any suggestions? This thing ran great on my POS IBM.

Exact error

The exact error message is, "Sound Blaster is not responding on selected port."
This message comes up after the machine restarts in DOS. D I have to buy a new sound card to play this game? urrgh! Does anyone know where I can find XWave on the web? I have done a search, but i cannot find them. Should I uninstall and reinstall the PCI card/drivers? I'm not sure how that would help.

You should probably try removing the card's drivers, physically moving the card to another PCI slot (Creative cards tend to like PCI slot #3), and then re-install the drivers. After removing the drivers and the card, reboot into windows with no sound card installed in "Safe Mode" and go to Device Manager. Ensure that there are no "ghost" instances of your card anywhere in there. Then install your card and reboot and install the drivers. See if that helps any. You may simply have an IRQ conflict or something of the sort.

OK, I'll try. BTW, how do I delete the DOS drivers? Is just deleting them and deleting the line from auto exec.bat going to do it?

Hi nksmfamjp,

Trying to get sound in some DOS games was always a nightmare. "Blood" was the ultimate example of this. There use to be whole forums dealing with sound issues and solutions. In fact, it was quite common for gamers to have to make up a dedicated DOS boot-up floppy just to get any DOS game to run properly.

My solution for Blood was to find an old P90 with the original hardware and the game ran with no problems at all. In fact, this P90 runs all the DOS games I've
thrown at it. No sound issues at all.

So if you cannot find a fix for your problem, then you might have to resign yourself to playing your DOS games on your IBM or pick up a cheap 486 or early Pentium.

I can't go back. I would lose the game first. I can't believe that it won't work. I got it to setup the card now in DOS. It says that the DMA channel maybe interfering with something else. How can I find an open DMA channel? Also, wouldn't a DMA problem also be NG in Windows? The setup works when I run the setup program in a DOS window. Can I run the game in a DOS window somehow?

How does this sound? I can make it play in a DOS window. Will that be a pain? I haven't played a whole game there yet. Also, how can I write a batch file or something to make it load as a DOS Window. I would like to write a batch file that I can click on which will open a DOS window and then input the correct file name to run it. any ideas?

I would say if it runs fine in a DOS Window, then go for it. It's better than nothing. Once you start playing the game you'll probably forget about the Window.

If this was a game of mine that I wanted to play, I would scour the net looking for any user groups, fan sites, or communities. These are the guys that know everything about the game and have all the answers e.g. bootdisks, batchfiles, mods, troubleshooting.
