Well, I am a newbie to this board and hope to stick around for bit and help out if I can.
Anyway, to start off, I have a question regarding Creative sound cards ( cheap one at that ). As you can see I have awesome bench mark scores but games still seem to run a bit rough around the edges, mainly the newer games such as Max Payne. I play the game at its fullest settings. 1280X768X32 ( that res is as high as my monitor will go, or it will run at 60HRZ, eek, with full detailed texures, 32 bit texure depth, Antistropic ( spelling ? ) fitler Triple buffer all deatil on max. Now, the game runs at around 80FPS but I get a bit of slowdown at times, to around 30-40 FPS. I have read that Creative sounds cards can cause all kinds of trouble with Geforce cards, is this true so I know to just go out and get the Hercules XP. I have all the very latest 4 in 1 drivers and have my bios set up to perfection, very stable. Thank you for your time. |

Welcome!!
I see your specs are almost the same as mine (except I have a cheaper graphics card). What sound card do you have now? If you are a real audiophile and have good speakers, spend the extra cash for the audigy but if you're not, the soundblaster Live can be had for about 32 dollars. I too have a sound problem (integrated sound sucks) and will probably get the soundblaster live. |

Welcome aboard TBird!!!
I have not heard any info on a soundcard affecting gameplay (ie fps), although some one else might be able to validate or dispell that. I have a creative soundblaster live xgamer and GeForce2, and don't have any problems. Good to have you, Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome
![]() Yeah, it is a very touch and go subject. The sound card I have is just a cheap Vibra 128 PCI 16 bit, not really doing my set up justice sound wise. I did take off the connector that feads its way from the CD rom to the card for Music CD playback and it did help a bit, not by much though. Anyway, thanks for your replies

Hi Tbird, welcome to the PC Mech forums!
It's true that cheap sound cards with low quality chipsets can really put a dent on FPS because of their high processor usage. However, with the SB Live! being the number one card for gamers for a while now, I think it's safe to say that it doesn't have that problem, and you get get a "Value" version for around $35. Hope that helps.

Hi DrZaius, thanks for the input
. Ok then, new sound card here I come. What do you think of the Hercules XP, I was thinking that my GF3 being of same brand name would complement each other.
