Networking for Xbox 360?

this week i'm going to be picking up my xbox 360 elite..
i'm very very stoked about getting it
my question with the networking is...do i HAVE to purchase the microsoft branded wireless adapter or can i use a 3rd party USB wireless adapter?
also would the original xbox wireless adapter work with the 360?

only reason i ask is because the system is already costing me enough as it is, and paying $100 for the adapter is kinda steep
i didn't want to go wired because my tv is all the way downstairs and my router is upstairs and i don't feel like having a 50ft cable running through my house

i dont know. i would peruse the xbox.com forums. if you can use a 3rd party device, someone could recommend one.
