Downloading Games

I've read a couple of posts about dwnld vs. boxed games, and am still a little unclear on one thing. Do most pay-and-download games just give you an .exe file that you can back up on a disk, or do they install it on your computer? The reason I'm asking is I am planning on doing a major computer upgrade within a year, and the game I want is not available on disc (yet?).

It depends on where you download them from. Some, yes, give you an installation file. Steam, on the other hand, just downloads the game into the steam client. While these files can be backed up, they don't do much good without steam installed.

Steam is pretty good as long as you have a working internet connection, it will let you install the same game on as many computers as you want so long as you use your account on only one computer at a time, this is great if you want to play the same game on multiple computer (not at the same time) or if you upgrade often.
