Ultimate Quake or Half-Life Platinum?
Hello everyone,
I just built myself a new computer a few weeks ago thanks to pcmech.com Anyways, on to the topic at hand. I can't decide which bundle I should buy. It's either Ultimate Quake (comes with Q1,2,and 3 area) or Half-Life Platinum (comes with Half-life Game of the year edition, Counter-strike, and Team Fortress). Half of my friends tell me to get the Half-life bundle, the other half of my friends tell me to get the quake bundle. I've never played any Quake games so it would be a whole new experience to me. While on the other hand, I have played Half-life before esp. its Counter-strike mod. That in mind, I fear I might get bored of the half-life bundle too soon. Any feedback will be appreciated. |

You've never played any of the Quake games!
You're really missing out, those where great games. I didn't really get into playing Quake 3 Arena (I'm more of a UT guy), but I spent endless hours playing Quake and Quake 2 single player, they're all great games. However, they're both outdated and you'll get bored when you finish them.On the other hand, Half-Life and Counter-Strike is much more popular now and it's also a good game and has more current mods, so go for this.

You should get both - they're both great packages - but if money is short just now, just flip a coin and buy either package. You won't be dissapointed either way. Then buy the other pack later.
Every FPS fan should play Quake, Quake 11, and Halflife at least once. If you included Doom in that list, you would almost have the entire history of FPS laid out before you. I envy you if you have not played these masterpieces before. You have a lot of extremely exciting hours of gaming ahead of you. The same applies to the multiplayer classics in both packs. |

For me it's all about the Counter Strike with a little (sometimes a lot) of Unreal Tourn on the side. There are a lot of FPS games coming out though. Might wanna check out the new Wolfenstein II. It's rocks.

First, I would like to thank you all for responding.
Well, the fact of the matter is that I'm short on cash (I'm a college student). I'll definitely buy one bundle in a week or so. And about the other bundle, maybe around Christmas I'll buy it. But right now, I'm even more confused because I checked out Unreal Tournament and that game looks tempting too! I've played Half-life and Counter Strike quite a bit, so can anyone distinguish Unreal Tournament and Quake2/3. Edit: Oh...forgot to mention one more thing, I would just download the demos of all these games, but I have a 56k dialup connection! Also, I'm looking for games that will run atleast somewhat smoothly on a 56k connection. Last edited by chpco2000; 10-23-2001 at 12:17 PM. |

The regular Counter Strike game (not the Platinum bundle) allows you to play all the Internet versions (Team Fortress Classic, Counter Strike, and Half Life Deathmatch- not to be confused with Half Life single player). Unless you are into playing Half Life single player, there is no need to buy the platinum bundle. I believe when you update Counter Strike from 1.0 to 1.3 (which you must do to be up to date) that it will also automatically update TFC and HLDM. For $30US I'd buy plain old Counter Strike if you plan on playing online. Maybe the difference in price of CS and HL Platinum is enough to buy the Ultimate Quake!!

Personally I'd go with Quake (I'm new here so my opinion probably doesn't count for much
) I used to play both quite a bit before school took over my life, I enjoyed q3 more. If you haven't played any Quake games in the past you definetly want to check them out.

Well, I'm afraid that my vote would have to go too Half-Life! Don't misunderstand, the Quake Bundle is great too. Another thought could possibly be the new "Doom-Collectors Edition." It has all 3 Doom games but, unfortunately, it is still using the original engine so game play wouldn't be as good as the other 2. However, it only costs $19.95 at EB!! Whichever bundle you decide on will do ya pretty good, because there are ALOT of free add-ons and mods for all the Quakes and Half-Life!! For example, Quake came out about 4 or 5 years ago and they are still making new levels and mods for that game. On second thought, forget about the 'Doom Collection,' because you'll get ALOT more play from either Half-Life or Quake!! Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get Half Life, it's been supported for over 3 years and was the game of the year. Go to gamespy.com and look at the servers for quake3 and half life. Even if you add all the quakes together, they're less than half of the amount of hl servers.

That's true. I didn't take that into consideration. There are a TON of HL servers out there still. When I stopped playing Q3 it was dying, barely any good servers left, most of the decent players were playing ra3 and/or team dm.

With so many mods for Q3 Arena and Half-Life does anyone know if someone has made up any Bin Laden mods so you can get your own back on the Afghan scum? I'd rush out and buy the games for that very reason.

While not directly a Bin Laden scenario there is a Counter Strike map called Arab Streets which takes place in a desert type village and arab music.

Maybe the question I should've asked is that which of the three games run the smoothest on a 56k connection? I know you have to take into consideration of connection quality, ping time, ect..., but some games tend to run smoother (less lag) than others on the same connection.
I have played Half life and Counter strike before, especially counter strike. And on a 56k connection with a decent server ping was still a lot of lag. But I love Half Life, it's an awesome single player game. I guess I just want a decent single, as well as multi-player, bundle. Some info on the three bundles: Ultimate Quake: $30 includes Quake 1,2 and 3 Arena. Half Life Platinum: $46 includes Half Life (game of the year edition), Counter Strike and Team Fortress. Totally Unreal: $20 includes Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament (game of the year edition) and some expansion to Unreal. Last edited by chpco2000; 10-26-2001 at 05:53 PM. |

Well, if you're also looking for a great single player game than Half-Life is the right choice. It's by far the best single player fps I've ever played.

Simple answer:
H A L F L I F E Quake is great also, but make the right first choice - HL. I actually prefer Unreal Tournament to Quake. Good Luck.

Well, Since the majority of you (including DrZaius) say Half life, I guess I'll get that bundle.
One more thing, I downloaded the Unreal Tournament demo (it took forever on a 56k modem) and played it for a while. All I have to say is that it ran pretty smoothly with little to no lag at all on a 200-250 server ping. And since most of you say that CS is more 56k friendly, I'll assume smoother online gameplay will result from CS. |
