Thumbs down Questioning performance.

I am questioning the performance of my desktop rig in Crysis. If I put everything on high, 1280x1024 with 16xAAQ, I get about 2 fps. A guy on messenger claims his rig (same as mine, except with a Phenom 9500) gets 18fps on the same settings, without AA we're about even. Does a quad core make this much of a difference with AA or is something seriously wrong with my system?

It's possible it's the quad core but ...

Last July it was said that Crysis would run best on a quad core with a 64 bit OS and 4 GB ram : http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/98...runs-quad-core

But, come fall, the real world frame rates said that it wasn't making any difference : http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/005860.html

Then this showed up in January : http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=249782

That puts you in the world of game patches, it should improve performance on dual cores as well, and you should check for a possible chipset update.

Just a word of warning, there were a lot of hacks out earlier this year for Crysis and it's also possible that whoever you talked to has one of them installed.
What it's doing I don't know and it's possible he doesn't either so the fact that he gets 16X AA and an almost playable frame rate may or may not be what's really going on.
If you decide to go that route be careful.

I have not tried it with 16xAAQ but I will soon to see what rates I get.

But considering your processor and video card, I don't think 2 fps is right. Maybe 10 FPS< depending on map. I think when I tried it on 8xAA on high I got like 20 fps+.

Crysis really doesn't really need AA. The major performance decrease is not worth the minor visual improvement.

I hooked my PC up to my theater system yestderday and played Crysis on my 1080p plasma. I had most settings on high, some on very high, and at 1920x1080 it was quite smooth. I was pleasantly surprised at how playable it was. I played through a bit of the campaign. I'm going to have to do that more often. Crysis has some serious sub sonic sound that can only be experienced with a real subwoofer.

Just tried it again now and got the same FPS as him (13-18), but after I minimse and restore the game, it drops to about 2 fps again. Probably out of video RAM. Anyway, good to know that I'm getting proper performance.
