Best Laptop for Gaming?

Hi,

I hope to get a new laptop in the next month or so and I'm in the process of reviewing my options.

Ideally, I'd like to get one that's good for gaming and multimedia - the Sony Vaio AR series looks like a front runner. Also the Dell XPS series.

I was also looking at Alienware, Voodoo, Rock, laptops - but I wonder if they are good for all round work including photoshop, video and general desktop publishing and multi-media work?

I'd like to be able to play games with good graphic settings - but I also need to work on it. So I guess I need a good alrounder and I assume that the high end gaming machines aren't really all rounders in the same way that a sony vaio may be.

I am kind of veering towards a Sony - which also has a tv tuner and stuff. But is that the best choice?

Thanks.

Any high or mid- end gaming laptop will also be good for video and photoshop. Gaming laptops quickly get expensive and have the drawback that they will be outdated in a year or two and do not have the upgrade ability of a desktop. All of the brands you listed make good gaming laptops- it is just a matter of how much you want to spend (dro not be fooled by the 'initial' price- after you customize it to make it good for games you will be well over $2000).

If a desktop is not feasible for your lifestyle- you might consider buying a mid range laptop that will do the video and then use the saved money to buy a PS3- then you can watch blu ray movies and play games at 1080p.

Unless you don't mind pissing your money away, I would not buy a high end laptop for gaming. Its almost guaranteed there will be something twice as fast within a year. Go with a second or third generation laptop if you are going to do this.

I bought a laptop for college, and I really regret it. It cost way too much for the performance I got. Handled some games for awhile but it's totally outdated now (been about 18 months).

Yup same here, I bought a "gaming" laptop prior to my year long overseas deployment so I would have something to play games on and it's only been a couple years and I can't play anything newer on it. Stick to a desktop for gaming. Gaming laptops = worst idea ever!

For the price of an Alienware (Dell) Laptop, you could buy a desktop now and a new one later.

It doesn't really matter which brand the laptop is, they still get outdated at the same time as the laptop manufacturer only builds the laptop from parts from other vendors, and they decide when stuff becomes outdated.

I bought an Alienware 2 years ago and It's not holding up to the price. I would not recommand to anyone an Alienware no matter if they were rich and had tons of money to waste.

my opinion is that laptop is not good for gaming. maybe barely for browser-game (travian, imperia etc.)

You can certainly game on a laptop. Granted, you probably won't be able to upgrade much on them and they will cost $1200-$3000, but you can certainly game on them.

Lightbulb Gateway P-7811 FX

Gateway has a 17" FX laptop that has been getting TONS of praise lately by the PC media for being a killer deal on a powerful game-capable laptop. I've got a couple of magazines that raved about it. It's a 17" P-Series FX laptop. I think it's this one. Gateway P-7811 FX

Here's a review by MaximumPC that gave it a "9-Kick Ass" score.
