I am looking at updrading my Nvidia MX2 32mb AGP card. Since my chipset(BX) can only run stable at 100 fsb speed and my AGP slot only supports 1x/2x, there are very few options out there for an upgrade. What is the low-down on PCI cards? Is there a noticible drop in performance when using the PCI slot instead of the AGP slot? And last of all, any reccomendations?

You can always use an AGP card,it would run fine at 2x.
An affordable card is the Hercules Prophet, using the KyroII chipset. That's what I'm using and it works like a champ(by default,it only runs at 2x) It's fast, image quality is excellent, and it's cheap! Check it out. |

If you want to run a 133 FSB, the only instability will be the AGP - you need to get a card that will handle running at 89 MHz or get a PCI card. Tom's Hardware ran a test a while ago on AGP video cards at that bus speed.

GLC,
Yeah, my video card DID run at that FSB speed when I had my 667/133 processor. When I upgraded to a 1000/133 it pushed the card over the edge. It ran, but frequently (and randomly) crashed. Thanks for the article, it was informative and useful. Recent Issue: I have downloaded Nvidia's latest Detonator Driver and DX8. Now I have a problem going from an Open GL program (X-Plane) to a Direct X program (Unreal). The video driver fails to load and I have to reboot every time I switch between these two (openGL and DX). Any others have this problem with Nvidia's new driver? What's the fix? Thanks! TGIF! |
