Unreal Tournament Multiplayer Hosting Problem

Whenever I try to host a multiplayer game of UT (via a LAN) it crashes to the desktop every time. Very strange.

I can play single player games ok and if one of mates hosts I can join in the game no problem. Any ideas what the problem could be?

I'm patched up to the latest version (436) and using the latest NVIDIA drivers.

I'm running on a 1.4 Athlon, 512meg ram, Geforce2mx. Using a 10/100 PCI network card. The networks running via a hub and no problems with anything else, its a UT specific problem.

Start the server from a batch file, that'll solve this problem and take less resources than a dedicated server to boot.

Thanks people, I'm not actually hosting a dedicated server. I'm hosting and playing in the game at the same time. Does this make any difference to the advice given?

Yes, hosting it as a dedicated server is actually more reliable, that way if your UT client happens to crash, the server will still be running.

UT has a web based admin tool, so after you've launched the dedicated server in a dos window, just open your browser and type in "localhost", which will bring you directly to the game options where you can change whatever you like.

When you're done and want to close the server, close the dos window.

Yes, but the game being the client and server in the same process is unreliable, so if you start a dedicated server, then open the game and join your own server (along with the person you're playing with), it should work better for both of you.
