Not to worry DD, I haven't done any major upgrades on my machine in over 4 years.. it's still a 2.4Ghz 400Mhz FSB Northwood. Heck, I just finally put in a DVDRW earlier this year.

Im retired from PC gaming...there hasnt been anything out there that caught my interest in quite a long time. Also now that Im running Linux, I wouldnt be able to game much anyway. I mostly listen to music on my rigs...kind of got bored doing the PC thing...now its home stereo systems.

There is an article in the current issue of Maximum PC (November issue I think) which has a guide for running games in linux by using wine. Seems they got Sins of a Solar Empire working on linux, would be interesting to use wine if the performance hit compared to windows is low. I'm currently working on building a low-end linux box to use for some light gaming with wine.

With a G550, he should be getting about 1000 or so in 3DMark 01.

I've never benchmarked any of my computers. I really don't care how they compare to other computers...as long as they do what I need them to do I'm happy.

That said, I'll probably be retiring this computer early next year and my P4 2.8GHz will take it's place as our spare computer. Been about 5 years since I built us a new computer and I think the next one will be a quad core system since I'm doing a lot of photo editing with Photoshop now. I finally need a computer with some power to run the programs I'm using.

You know, I'd probably go with a high end dual core (E8400 or higher) over a lower end quad. The quads with 1333 FSB and 3 GHz speeds are still quite pricey.

Thanks George. I'm not quite ready to build yet, but I'll keep the Core 2 Duo's in mind. I've only built with them but never owned a computer with any of the dual core processors. Would be a nice step up from my 2.8GHz Northwood and my wife's 3.0GHz Cedar Mill systems.

Really? Cool. I've seen how much faster the Core 2 Duo systems I've built are compared to my 2.8GHz Northwood and have been wanting to build one but really didn't need the power until I got interested in digital photography recently. Now I can justify building something more powerful and up to date.

What are the specs for your system? Mainly, what motherboard are you using?

But let me tell you - my dual quad core rig just smokes a dual 'dual core' system we have on campus. 40 minute HD video rendered and compiled in 27 minutes on my rig, takes well over two hours on the rig on campus.

I'm running a P5K Pro with 4gb of DDR2-800, 8600GTS, and a 750gb Seagate 7200.11. XP Pro 32 bit.

Dave, your software can make use of all those cores.
