LOTR online- status?

Is anyone playing this?- I'm looking for a MMO for the holidays but do not know if this is worth the investment- the developer will not release how many play it. I was wonder what it is like online- not enough other players- too many other players- other players are obnoxious etc.

Or are there other recommendations?

I played WoW until I had two toons at lvl 70 and stopped the account. I do not want to start this game over.

I have also tried Age of Conan and did not like it that much.

Tried LOTRO for a few weeks. Liked it OK. Didn't love it. Was a bit too "grindy" for me.

What didn't you like about Conan? Just picked it up today on a whim because it was on sale for 19.99 at Target. I'd been avoiding it because of the gore (I don't mind it, but I have young kids and don't always want to wait until they're in bed..).

Personally, I've really enjoyed Guild Wars for the last 3 years. It has instanced play and isn't a "true" MMO, but there is very little grind involved in playing the fun parts of the game and the PvP is great - relies completely on skill rather than grind. It's a little dated, though. GW 2 comes out soon.

Conan is fun for the first character; however, there is only one route for the initial levels- so you have to do the exact same quests for each new character. It is also more PvP oriented at the upper levels.
