Hi Gang
Has any one had trouble with a game called "Murder at the Abby"? It takes about 20 to 3 min to download this game, and it is supposed to be very good. No shoot em ups or anything like that just s mild puzzle game more or less. It loads up and you get sound but no picture. Tried so many ways, installed it to its own folder, on the HD, tried 2 different DVD players, etc. Tried it loading under administrator, etc. Nothing works. Every different way you try it it does the same thing, sound but no picture. This is on a good system fairly new, DDR2, a Asus 9600GT card, lots of ram, Asus MOBO, you name it. Any help appreciated..........Gunny

Hi Pam--Hope you had a great Christmas
Surprised you are down here, my first post in this section. I am doing this for my wife she is having trouble getting this game to run. The game is right from a disc, brand new right out of the box. her MOBO is a Asus P5K/EPU. I just to see downloaded it to my computer which is an older computer all the way around, older video card and everything and it down loaded and played just fine. And I installed it on my newer setup just to see and it played there just fine too. So I am wondering what could be going on with her computer that is not letting this game load up right. It goes through all the 3 disc's just like it should and we have tried this several times and each time taking out all the previous versions first. We even upgraded her video card, cause it was a smaller card, so Santa brought her this newer card.I had my doubts that the newer card would solve this problem but wanted to get her a better card any way. So I was not surprised the new card did not change a thing, voice is there great but no picture. Thanx....Gunny |

Hi Pam
It was pointed out to me, (by my other half) that the reason you asked about the downloading is I am being dumb about my descriptions as to installing and downloading. My mistake. I will try to correct that in the future. Correction is I installed it from their disks. :-) Thanx....Gunny |

Hi Gunny,
If you installed from the disks then it's time to email the publisher ( If you got it form Amazon you can rma it to them and they'll send you a replacement, if you got from a "store" you need the publisher to do it. ) and get it replaced. If it happens twice that's another matter but from your description the disks are at fault. |

Hi Pam....You are saying it is the game even though it installed ok on 2 other computers.???? I do know that this game got very bad reviews, but mostly for the poor quality of the graphics, and too much dialog, etc. Don't recollect there being any for this kind of problem. Trust me my wife and I went over everything, and tried so many suggestions, and things on our own, it is not funny. And naturally we thought since it installed ok on the other computers, we thought it had to be some thing with her computer, even though it was fairly new, and had all the goodies, with enough of this and enough of that, we thought it had to work.
Thanx and take care.....Gunny |

Your wife's video card is more than enough and the game's requirements are modest. From your description you have a full set of updates. What resolution are you trying to run it at ? What is the resolution on the other computers? |

Hi Pam
That is another thing I did not mentioned, is the resolution. We ran it at all different resolutions, what they reccomended, etc. Now on that subject, Don't they auto set the resolution, because I thought they ran diff resolutions for diff games. I could be wrong here, I really don't do many games. My wife has played a ton of them, so I am thinking she knows more then I do about this, that is what has surprised me about her having trouble with this one. This is the frist one she could not get to play, so it really surprised me when it played on both my computers, and not hers. And all 3 of these computers have diff video cards in them. We both have wide screens too. I have noticed with my computer I do have to shift the picture around ar times with a couple of games t get all the detail in the screen. She never has to do this. She has a better monitor then me. Both of my computers use a KVM switch, so common keyboard and mouse, and monitor. Thanx....Gunny Thanx....Gunny |

P.S. My wife is a member of Game Boomers forum and she has posted there about this problem too, and they are stumped also. They recommended the better video card, and thought for sure that was the problem. Of course this did not solve the problem, but it needed replacing any way. So no big loss. I guess the big thing that has me scratching my head is the fact that it plays the sound but no picture, all through the intro, and when is comes to the actual playing ot it, it goes south. Some times it will let you get to the screen where you do the saves, set up, etc. But then goes south.
Thanx....Gunny |

Only other thing I can think to try would be maybe a different version of the video card driver. Also, does the game use DirectX and is it installed and working okay on that machine?

The only other thing I can think of is that there's some software, perhaps a pop-up blocker or maybe one of those downloads that lets you view tv shows (The ones whose stations don't have sense enough just to use Flash and otherwise let well enough alone.) that's on your wife's machine but not on your other ones.
It's not something you have to do very often these days but the old work around of shutting down anything you don't need (Be ruthless, for instance you don't need an internet connection for a 1 person game and so you shut down security software when you disconnect and if you're running F@H close it out. ) then trying the game again might work here . If it does you'd add them back a one at a time till you find out what caused the problem. |

During the install of the game it ask you about the Direct X, whether you want to install it. We have tried both ways, installing it and not installing it. No change. And as far as it working all right, I assume it is, how could you tell if it wasn't.? Pam We have not tried that way yet. We will give that a go and see what happens. Thanx....Gunny |

Well, if you've tried it both ways, that's probably not it. Only way I know of testing it is to go to the Run box (in the Start menu) and type DXDIAG. That'll bring up the DirectX diagnostic program, and there's several tabs that have various "test" items under them (mainly the tabs for Display, Sound, and Music). If the audio and video tests all show it working, then DX should be fine. I don't know for sure which version of DX you're using, but that dxdiag is included at least up through version 9.0c (not sure about dx10).
