Angry I have a 1GHz Athlon and I'm getting a score of 1096 in 3DMark2001!

Hello everyone,

my new computer has the following specs:
EPoX 8K7A motherboard
1GHz Athlon w/266 MHz FBS
256 megs of PC2100 DDR RAM
GeForce 2 MX 200 video card w/ 32 megs of SDRAM

With these specs, I'm getting 3D mark 2001 scores around a 1000 with the default settings in 3D Mark 2001, not including the theoretical speed tests cause my card does not have those capabilities. Is this right?

You have got to be kidding me South...Could it be that the EPoX mobos arent performance motherboards? I mean...everyone tells me I should be getting over a 100 frames per second in Quake 3 with 800x600x32 with high quality settings, but I get 15 frames per second!
Also, people tell me I should easily get a score of 2000 or higher in 3D mark 2001.

Have you installed the drivers for the motherboard chipset?
Your boards have an AMD northbridge and a VIA southbridge. You must at least install the AMD AGP driver even if you choose not to install the VIA drivers for the southbridge.

JC...already had those installed. Hm...if I upgrade from a GeForce 2 MX 200 to a Radeon 7500, will I see that much of a performence gain?

If you're only getting 15 frames per second with an Athlon 1.4GHz, no video card in the world is going to rememdy your ailments. You've got some driver problems or you haven't installed the right patches or Via or AMD drivers. There's something you're missing.

Go over your settings again in detail... I'm sure you've overlooked something.

Hm...I reinstalled all the drivers (the latest ones of course) and still not getting any improvements.
Should I just reformat my hard-drive and start fresh?

Could you right click on My Computer, go to Properties, then click the Device Manager tab and tell me if there are any items there with yellow exclamation marks beside them? Also.... Have you entered the BIOS and tinkered with any of the settings in there? There's one called AGP Aperture Size... it shouldn't be a big deal, but set it to 1/2 of your SDRAM or DDR Ram (whichever the case may be), also see if your card is set to AGP 4X in the BIOS. These aren't going to be remedies, but they could increase your performance.

No devices with exclamation points in Device manager. AGP Apature is (and has been) set to 128 megs (256 megs of DDR RAM/2 = 128). And AGP is set to 4x.

Man...I must have really messed up something when I put this computer together...Let me check all the wiring again in the case.
If that won't solve the problem, then'll I reformat my hard-drive.
