Best hard drive for gaming

I'm building a new system and I wanna know which one is the best hard drive.
Maxtor? Quantum? Seagate?

Is the difference between 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm really noticeable?

Same with the interface, ATA 66 or ATA 100?

Thanx in advance.

Maxtor bought out Quantum some time ago, so they are the same thing really. I personally wouldn't touch an IDE Seagate (my opinion only). IBM would be my first choice. Spend the extra for 7200RPM. Most are going to be UDMA100 now anyway and you wouldn't notice the difference between 66 and 100 as they are only burst speeds, not sustained speeds.

I personally don't like WD. I've had two of them take the eternal celestial dirt nap way before their time. I will admit though that these drives gave up the ghost at least 2 years ago... so maybe WD got their act together.

I prefer Maxtor DiamondMax series.. I'm using a 40Gb 7200 RPM ATA 100 Maxtor drive and it's quiet as a mouse and data transfer rates are zippy. I'm thoroughly happy with it, and I've had it for a year and a half. No bad sectors and no problems. I play alot of Counter Strike, Tactical Ops, and Unreal Tournament. Everything runs smooth with no studders or hickups.

I'd recommend you a fast IBM hard drive, like the 60GXP. They're UDMA100 with 7200 rpm . .and yes, the performance increase form 5400 to 7200 IS noticeable.

I use IBM Deskstar's-- one is 4 years old and still going strong. FYI- http://dealnews.com/ says the cheapest prices for the IBM Deskstar 60GXP ($122) and the Maxtor Diamondmax 40GB ($92) (the two HD's mentioned above) are at Newegg.com.

Also, these HD's are now listed as ultraATA/133. Don't know if this will make a noticeable difference.

I use a maxtor 60g 7200, works like a charm for gaming. But if you go to buy a Maxtor 40g 7200, look at what drive is actually in the box, if it is a quantum in the maxtor box take it back. I bout a 40g 7200 "maxtor" from staples, had a quantum hd in it, hd was shot, returned it, got another, same thing, it was shot, tried again, same thing, eventually got fed up and got the 60 g, worked fine (it was a maxtor this time). I was told by the maxtor support that a lot of the quantum hard drives they recieved were bad and were not checked properly.
