Doom messed my comp up.
I installed doom collectors edition on my little brothers comp and things are acting screwy now. When you start doom the game screen is in the upper left hand corner of the monitor, only takes up about 1/4th of the screen and its only in 16 colors. He cant play UT now. If you try to change the monitor from its current settings (800 x 600 16 bit) to ANY other settings you get an error message saying something about the settings cant be changed and to check the display adapter in device manager. Everything looks fine in device manager and I have the latest updated drivers for monitor (samsung 55e) and video card (voodoo 3000 agp). Everything worked great until I installed doom. By the way when I installed it I got a screen telling me that I need to install direct x or the game wouldnt work properly so I did. I cant remember what version of direct x comes with the game by I checked dxdiag and it is telling me that I am running dx 8.0.

click on start/run/ then type DXDIAG then hit enter. Click on the display tab then click on help. This may help you find out what is going on.

Disregard uninslling 8.0 that is wrong.
Here I have more information for you. You could go to the manufacturers web site for the video card and try an updated driver. or you could click on run type DXDIAG in the box hit enter. Under directx features tab click disable to the right of direct draw acceleration. You can also verify all directx files open DXDIAG as I stated. Click on Directx files tab look in the notes box, if all files are present and undamaged the notes box reports no problems found. The whole idea here is that you may be using drivers or your video card ddoes not accept direct draw. So therefor you can see if there is an updated driver for this video card that accepts directdraw or simply disable it as I stated above. |

It may be a refresh rate problem.
Go into display properties>settings>advanced>adapter (I have a Voodoo and a geoforce in this machine, so the path to the adapter tab may be different from yours)and check the refresh rate. It should be at optimal or adapter default. If these choices do not exist with the Voodoo 3, then check your monitor manual for it's highest refresh rate and change the rate in the adapter drop-down list. Play around and see what happens. Also try reinstalling DX8 over the top of itself. There is no need to uninstall it first. Uninstalling DX is a risky operation even with programs that purport to do it. It is so closely entwined with Windows that if it goes wrong you are looking at reinstalling Windows. Very often with older games you are given the option during installation to install an older version of DX. Do not do this as it will mess up the more recent version. I have Doom on my PC and it works well with DX8. I will not install DX from any games CD. When I want to upgrade DX, I download the full program from Microsoft. That way you are guaranteed to get everything included. Last edited by mike breck; 11-11-2001 at 01:18 PM. |

Like I said ive reinstalled drivers for vid card, monitor, and I installed dx 8.1 over 8.0 and it still wont let me change resolution or color depth. I get an error message telling me to check the display adapter in device manager but everything looks fine there. Everything was good until I installed doom. This is the collectors edition that was just released for win 9x and me. Ive got it installed on my other comp and it runs just fine. What could have happened during installation of doom to cause this problem?

Refresh rate for monitor is optimal.
What would disabling direct draw have to do with not being able to change color depth or resolution? How are the two related? |

The video card may not support direct draw. Try to disable it and let me know what happens then I'll help you take it from there.
There are two reasons for this well actually three. one the card itself may not support direct draw two the driver for the card may not accept direct draw. Since you upgraded directx versions this may be the cause. |

I would try uninstalling Doom and seeing if the problem persists. It may have been a bad installation.
If the problem doesn't go away then you could try a clean installation of the Voodoo. To do this, you need to COMPLETELY uninstall the Voodoo drivers and software. BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY WITH SCANREG. Empty C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. Then extract your Voodoo Drivers to the same folder. Change your graphics adapter to Standard VGA. Go into Safe Mode and remove the Voodoo from Add/Remove Programs and Device Manager. Delete the Voodoo setup file in C:\WINDOWS\INF\. Also delete the "inf." file in C:\WINDOWS\INF\OTHER. The "INF" folder is a hidden folder in Windows, so you may have to go to VIEW>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW and tick "Show all Files". Then go to START MENU>RUN and type REGEDIT. Left-click on the "Edit" tab at the top of the Regedit Window. Click on "Find" and type in "Voodoo". When regedit finds a reference to Voodoo, right-click on it and select DELETE. Then left-click on the EDIT tab at the top again and click on FIND NEXT. Regedit will find the next entry for Voodoo. Some single line entries may appear in the right-hand pane and some complete Voodoo folders will appear in the left-hand pane. Delete them all, but be careful you only delete Voodoo entries. Take your time. When Regedit tells you it has finished searching the Registry, then you know that you have deleted all entries and can exit Regedit. Then restart the PC and let Windows redetect the Voodoo. When asked for Drivers, just type in the path C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (where you extracted the drivers at the beginning) and Windows should find them. If Windows doesn't find them, then use the "Browse" button to point Windows to the TEMP folder. Hopefully you should be back to normal and can try reinstalling Doom again. HTH |
