general video card question

right now i have a 8mb nvidia video card that i got about 3 years ago with my computer. im planning on building a new computer, and would like to know the difference between 8mb and 64mb. the main thing i would like to know is if movies will be better with a 64mb card. i know games will run alot smoother. i have a dvd player, and some divx movies. will their resolution be better or will it be hard to notice. also what is tv out like? do movies have better resolution when playing from the tv compared to the computer? thanks for the help.

well ? about 56mb, but yes you will see a big difference, and the tv can't match the resolution of a good computer monitor, try sitting as close to your tv as you do from your pc and you will see the difference very quickly.
These days video cards are pretty darn good, and there are prenty to pick from.
Depends on what you want to run on the pc, the quality of the monitor/video card combination, and of course the guts of the pc that drives it all, the CPU/motherboard/HDD, etc etc.

Depending on the video card you get, you will probably get better DVD playback as many cards now have either direct hardware DVD decoding or hardware assisted decoding. Direct DVD decoding of course is prefered. Yes, your games will be visually better and faster, but this is more a function of the better processor on todays video cards.

Hey Hal,

Does every GeForce 3 video card has direct hardware DVD decoding or hardware assisted decoding, or just some of them?

So if I get one of these cards, I won't have to pay for a decoder like the Creative's Dxr3, am I right?

Nuclear Crusader,
while I do not know about Geforce cards, I can tell you that Radeon cards have direct decoding. Hope that helps,
pstj

ATI cards that have the RageTheatre chip have the best DVD playback of any video card, period. This has been verified by many hardware review sites. Just make sure you get a model that has the RageTheatre chip, as not every one of the recent ATI cards has it. Currently, I feel that the ATI Radeon/Radeon2 boards are the best all around cards available. Just beware that ATI is still trying to get their driver development up to par with the likes of Nvidia. ATI has been historically slow in their driver department. Recently, they have made a strong effort to improve their driver situation. (No I do not work for ATI, nor am I being paid by them in any way, although I am open to any offers/bribes )

I'm not fully up to speed on the DVD decoding on the GF3 cards, the GF2 cards were hardware assisted.
