I bought a new video card recently (I know, it is the third post where I say that. sorry.
). It is a ATI Radeon 64 mb SDR Agp (I know, it is also the third time I say that. sorry again. ). I wanted to know, what do you guys think about this card ? is it relatively good (considering the relatively low price I paid it?) I haven't installed it yet, but will soon. I know it is not top-notch...thanks ! pstj |

Hi pstj,
The Radeon cards are great, I myself have a Radeon 32MB. What specifically are you planning to use it for? It's great for gaming and app tasks, but the DDR version would have been better if you wanted higher framerates in games. But other than that, it's no weak card by any means. Hope that helps.

Ok, now I'll sound ignorant...
What is a framerate ? I've heard that word tons of times ! As for the use, playing games, watching videos and doing some graphic stuff... thanks for the reply ! |

After your install is complete you may want to check the ATI web site for updated drivers.

pstj: Framerate (or Frames Per Second) is a measure of how many frames of video your system can display per second. Basically, if your games or movies are running slow and sluggish, and the objects on the screen are moving slowly, your getting a low FPS rate. The higher the framerate, the smoother the movie/game. The three things that affect FPS are the processor, the video card, and the amount of RAM you have in your system. Like I said, for the tasks you mentioned the Radeon 64MB is a great card. Hope that helps.

No the update improves the function of the hardware and also how it performs in the software environment. Make sure you download the proper one that is compatible with your operating system. Also you card may have been package many months ago and subsequently ATI probably has revised the drivers since your product was packaged. This is not to say that your present drivers do not work they will, but the updates can be a substantial improvement.

FPS aren't only affected by the hardware you have but the combination of the hardware and software(and software settings). If you're buying new games most likely your card won't do the tricks that the software is designed for. Your cards base is good but the card would be better with DDR Memory not SDR. For games just turn off, for example, Shadows or The amount of debris... obviously depending on the game it will be different. Also, the lower the resolution the higher you can set other variables. Basically play with setting to your liking.
