Try letting the game set you resolution first and them bumping up incrementally to see if it still works. My PC has 3 gb ram but an older 660gt video card and only a 3.0 hz processor and I was able to bump up the settings until i found a balance of graphics and performance.

Here is a cool review that might help answer your question. I would say with your video card 1680x1050 might be pushing it but you can always try it!

Turn all your settings down to minimum and then gradually turn them up. There is no set answer to your question. You have to decide for yourself what framerates and eye candy you prefer.

What do you mean by scoped - it crashed?
If Fear 2 doesn't have a native fps counter built in, then www.fraps.com is an awesome tool to help you gauge how the game is performing frames-per-second wise. As you begin messing with the settings it'll show you how much performance you're gaining or losing.

I still need to buy the first one myself. Is it still worth picking up (as well as the second one)?

The game isn't as engaging as the first, but the FPS mechanics are great, the weapons are so muhc fun to use, much more than the original. The ending was pretty mediocre, but I still think its worth a purchase.
