Tom Clancy's SSN on windows XP?

hows it goin guys.

I used to play this game (Tom Clancy's SSN) all the time on my old windows 95 machine, and that one no longer works. i love the game, and i really want to play it, but i cant get it to work on XP at all. i have searched all over the place, and many people say it works in compatability mode. well i have tried compatabillity mode for 95, 98, 2k and none work. i have also tried disabling hardware acceleration and running in low res with 256 colors and everything else. i dont know what else to do, any ideas? really appreciate it.

EDIT: Idk why or how, but now it works... i think it may have had to do something with the 'enable multi write' in the advanced settings tab.

I also am having the issue you described above. Where did you find "enable multi write" in the advanced settings tab? I cannot find this. Running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

Thank you

hello.i know nothing about Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.

on my xp though,it goes like this:

right click desktop-properties/settings/advanced/troubleshoot/enable write combining

dont see "enable multi write" maybe that's what jamesp57 meant?

this little windows 95 game (tom clancy's SSN) seems to be causing quite a stir as of late.

i also have issues trying to get it to run on xp. i have my config ("dumbed down" my pc) now set to run the game, in compatability mode (windows 95-256 colors-600 x 400 res.-actual desktop resolution-800 x 600/16 bit) with the "enable write combining" UNchecked

the game WILL in fact run like this,(videos, menus, gameplay works fine) but no sound at all.

as soon as i enable windows audio (start--->run-->services.msc--->restart windows audio) and try running the game again it will crash every time. disabling the audio again allows it to run consistently and smoothly, but still no sound.

apparently there's an issue with my audio device, more specifically, there's a conflict with it. the game originally requires a soundblaster 16 audio device. i don't know if that's the problem,or if it deals with a conflict in audio devices as far as compatibility mode recognizes it.

the error report that appears on game crash deals with this folder: C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\TEMP\e51d_appcompat.txt and has a ton of other stuff that follows which i do not comprehend.

hopefully one of us finds out how to work this thing on xp,w/o having to install an instance of windows 95. it SHOULD work...

thanks.

Talking bingo!

this: http://www.phatcode.net/downloads.php?id=198 solved my problems.

you download it,extract it. then whatever program you want to use it on (like SSN) you just right-click on the shortcut for the game you want, and choose the option "run with vdm sound" it starts up a dos dialogue in the background while the game(s) runs, and essentially emulates older windows based sound cards, ignoring your default hardware and drivers.

bottom line,a wonderful little piece of software which now allows me to run Tom Clancy's SSN in windows 95 compatibility mode on windows xp with NO problems. credit for the link goes to Shearwater on subism. couldn't have done it w/o you man.

hopefully,if you have a realtek HD audio sound device, and try running SSN on xp in compatibility mode, this thread will be here waiting for you when you are ready to jump off a bridge because you just bought a game which you think may be unplayable on your operating system.
