Gaming Clan Tips Please
Hey everyone.
Okay, I started a gaming clan about 2 months ago. It's grown a lot over the months but I want to know what I need to do to make it a serious, well known clan. Dedication is not an issue, I have been here for every step of the way. I've set up a site at www.usc.us.tc. I think it does what it's supposed to but any criticism would be welcomed. If you have any tips for me and how I can succeed please let me know. Thank you very much! |

A clan is pretty much a group of gamers who like to play one or more similar games. But...they do come and go as new games come out and old ones fade away.
Depending on what you want to do, you can organize tournaments within your clan or with other clans. Other than that, the idea is to have a good time, keep the drama to a minimum, and pick a few folks as your "managers" to keep things running smoothly.

Those usually end up being regulars who are enthusiastic about the clan. "Manager" is too strong a word, I suppose. Captains might be better.
Usually, they help organize events, keep things from getting *too* rowdy, and if they are familiar with server-side stuff, can be responsible for maintaining the servers, maplists, and adding new maps. |

A table tent on your PC at a LAN party that says "recruiting"?

I think a better roster would make my clan better. Does anyone know of a free online roster builder that I could use? Something to arrange my members with some kind of organization.

I am a member and moderator of the dark server. We do yearly LAN parties, participate in CAL, and other amature competative leauges. Having a solid community that is respectful and participates in events and community forums is a good way to have a long lasting cohesive clan. The other thing to remmeber is new games are always coming out. There are two types of gamers. Those that liike old games and refuse to play the old ones. ie CS 1.6 vs CSS. Then there are those that only play the new games and bad mouth the older versions. In order to keep the clan stable you have to support the regulars that play the old games with one server and then bring in new players with new games.
We have a CS 1.6 server, CSS, and TF2 We have a regular map rotation and throw in new stuff to keep things interesting. Remember gamers have the attention span of a nat on speed so you have to keep things interesting. That is the biggest challenge.

I saw the site not too long ago. I would redo the roster. If you are always looking for the "free" option than the site will not grow and players will not be attracted to the site. You need a site that is actactive and keeps peoples attention. A clean, crisp, organzied site.
I've never been fond of multi-gaming clans because it always seems that there is division within the clan. Playing 1 or two maybe even three games might work. Any more than that, I do not care for. My last clan, our site was run on vbulletin. vbulletin is the best out there IMO. You get what you pay for. Free sites will not look good compared to vbulletin. The site was running on php-nuke. It's is okay but we finally upgraded and the site looked so much better. Our roster page was very well put together and well organized. |

Isn't vbulletin forum software?
Also I found a great website builder called BlueVoda. It's pretty much like a Frontpage 2003 only it's like drag and drop with everything. I like it a lot, now if I could figure out a roster code or .php thing that'd be great. How do you make a registration system by the way? Like just so the users have some sort of login info. vBulletin is *expensive* forum software. Not worth it if you have a small community without a long track record.
There are themes available for most of the major (free) forum alternatives, so the thing about upgrading to vBulletin just for the looks is a bit short sighted. |
