What do I need???

Hi Fellow PCer's,
Once again I need your help I'm going to build my wife another PC and I need to know what kind of video card to install in it for high end 3-D grafix stuff, PaintShop Pro,3-D animation etc. I guess I need a card for rendering the images faster??? I don't know!! I'm going to build a DDR,Raid, etc system...Do I really need to spend $1000.00 on a card? Thanks again!! Scotty

Hi Scotty,

$1,000? Not really, but a good high end card is around $200-300. Check out the ATI Radeon 8500 64MB DDR or any brand with the nVidia GeForce3 Ti 500 chip, both are top of the line cards. Hope that helps.

I posted this find earlier

Voodoo 5/5500 AGP from 3DFX here.
I do not know if this is a good price,$164.27, but all the 3DFX fans might want it.

I would dodge the 3DFX bullet, unless you want to buy a card that won't have driver updates any more. 3DFX was bought by nVidia some time ago and their driver support vanished.

Also, you don't have to go for the very latest and greatest video card to get a terriffic graphic experience. You can get a Visiontek video card with a GeForce 2 GTS chip onboard for around $130. Just check www.pricewatch.com

Matrox used to be the leader for the work you are planning to do, but they have fallen way behind lately. I would probably go with a Radeon 8500. The GeForce 3 is an awesome card, but is biased primarily toward gaming.

How bout this card!!

I found a nVidia Quadro2 Pro DDR AGP for $305 + shipping. The best price I have found on them is $650.00 so this is a good price as long as they don't do like 3DFX!!! I already have a VooDoo 3 & 4 but I kinda like the DDR idea. I am gonna build a new system anyway. What do ya think?? Scotty

ps I just went to a Athlon 1.2 and was pleased to actually see the difference there is between my old Duron 750... I love it!!

Hey Scotty,

The system I have listed below is used for DV editing and everything from Paint shop Pro, Adobe illustrator and Maya 3D. Today i moved up to the ATI Radeon 8500 and lovin' it.

And as far as 3dfx goes, the going rate on a used but like-new Voodoo5 on forums and Ebay and such is about 100 bucks, in case anyone is looking for one. That should be your target price.

I was wondering if you can use a ddr video card with a non ddr motherboard or am I missing something?? Does the ddr have anything to do with the mobo or is it just built on to the video card for the card to use itself?? Thanks for the input. It's great since I'm gonna upgrade to something that is so important and a bigger investment too!! Scotty in AK

Video DDR is just for the card, you can use it on any board that supports the AGP.
