Flying simulator software

I have been looking at buying some flying software for some time now. What is some of the better flying software out there? Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe seems like an obvious choice. Is there some other flying software out there that you like?

As far as hardware goes, what is some of the better hardware? I have an old Microsoft joystick but is has the old style gaming port connector, not a USB connector and my mobo does not have the old style gaming port. The Saitek joystick and throttle looks great but is it overkill? http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Fli...5286136&sr=8-6 Is there something less expensive but almost as good?
