free benchmarks?

I've been trying to find a decent benchmarking program for my new laptop and I can't seem to find one that works for Win 7.

What are you trying to benchmark? video card? CPU? Overall performance?

The programs that I came across did it all but they cost money.

Also I noticed that theres not alot of benchmarks that work on Win 7.

Windows 7 has one built in, called the Experience Index or something along those lines.

A benchmark needs to have widespread use, otherwise you are comparing it to relatively nothing and what good is that?

The last benchmark that is widely used that is truly free is 3DMark06...and that is becoming more and more irrelevant as we get quad core chips DirectX11 and Windows 7. I don't know of any new, broad based, in widespread use, free benchmarks any longer either.

Futuremark wants to sell us their new benchmarks...forget that. Not when they used to be free. Booo! The benchmarks that are free become widely accepted for exactly that reason!

Eventually someone will come out with a relevant and free benchmark which will become widely used. Looks like it won't be Futuremark...too bad. I will miss the floating sailing ship with the afterburners and the giant dragon that leaps out of the water and over the ship.

It seems 3DMark06 is irrelevant in my case since my sony VAIO has a intel i7 quad core running on windows 7. All I wanted to do is see how good this baby really is.

You could run the Crysis Benchmark Tool. Crysis is still the game by which others are judged because of it's highly advanced graphics and that makes it a good benchmark tool. It's a great game too.

You can use the benchmark tool with the demo if you don't own the game:
