Angry AMD/GeForce 2 Freeze up Problem!

Excuse the format.. Ive been mailing this to every tech support place i can to get an answer for all these people waiting

Ill start by saying.. Im rather unnerved lately.. I just spent a bunch on a new system I put together.. And I had this problem.. Well its rather simple.. The computer was locking up while running games. It was locking up with a high pitch noise. I tried everything from changing everything's IRQ, formatting and reinstalling (which was a trip in itself), old and new driver testing, 3 versions of directx, hardware moving, added fans, tons of hours of stress and practical fighting with the computer.. Until I stumbled upon this forum ->

http://www.nocrash.com/bb/bb.shtml

Now, before I go on.. Ill tell you my computer stats

AMD Thunderbird 1.4 GHZ
A-Bit Siluro 64 MB GeForce 2 MMX 400 Graphics Card
Sound Blaster Audigy X-Gamer
256 DDR Ram
ECS K7AMA Motherboard
2 HDs - 1 40 GB Maxtor, 1 20 GB Western Digital

So you can imagine all the different problems I thought I was faced with.. Heat? Power shortage? Nope...

Turns out if you look at that message board.. MANY people with AMD Chips and GeForce Chipset cards are complaining about the same computer freezing up with the high pitch noise (or last sound sticking problem). Why so many people? Well, many of them have also contacted the companies.. As I have myself... Their tech support agents run people in the same circles Ive been through, reinstalling everything from software drivers to hardware wires... Personally Im sick of it and I want one of those companies to step forward and tell us what the hell is going on with these two things.. Is there some sort of compatibility issue that WE should know about?

Thank you for your time,

Ben "TSWolf" Moody

P.S. If you cannot help me (us) with this issue, please forward me to someone who can!

When I first started using computers these tech support people would hang up the phone leaving me worse off then when I called. From that moment on I decided that I would never call one of these guys again and I never have.
I would rather buy a book or come to this site and research the subject myself.

Hi TSWolf,

I was curious and checked out your mobo. It has the same chipset as my Asus A7A266. It can also run DDR and SDram like the Asus. Very similar mobo.

Now I have had no problems running a Geoforce2 mx32mb and a Geoforce2 64mb with this chipset, 256mb Crucial DDR, and 1200Mhz T/Bird. I also think TEEB has been running a 1400Mhz T/Bird with this mobo and the ABit Siluro 64 MB GeForce 2 MMX with the Asus.

Lots of people are running Athlons and Geoforces with no problems.

Could you post some more info.

What brand of Ram
What make and wattage of PSU
What HSF do you have
CPU temp in bios after 30mins
Mobo temp in bios after 30mins
Does the mobo have a CPU temp alarm
What games does this occur in
Have you overclocked either the video card or CPU

Could it be another sad case of the "ECS problems" I've read in another thread in the PC Hardware forum here in this site?

Angry Fire

Hi Wolf
My sympathies entirely, Ive had the same probs with a 1Gig T-Bird MSI KT133a
& Geforce 2 MX200 32MB setup .As i built the system myself I thought the prob was of my doing until I read all these reports. The companies that produce the hardware are not really interested in helping ,so its really up to like minded AND like- spirited ppl to help each other out.
Personally I think its to do with the VIA 4in 1 drivers. I D/L a utility for memory interleaving from the MSI drivers/utils page which helped a bit.The Nvidia 12.83 driver SEEMS to be the most stable so far.Good luck

Check the revision on your AGP if revision 1.0 will cause freeze. Motherboard must be 2.0 for gforce to work
